Yukela Pradesh
Yukela Pradesh is a state in the south-east region of Tersten. The majority of Yukela Pradesh contains the region of Yukela, the shielded province surrounded on most sides by Mountains, but also the eastern side of the Green River, from Greenstone to Port John. Yukela Pradesh comprises two major regions, namely Yukela in the south-east and Greenstone Valley leading to the Bay of Port John in the west. Beneath the major regions are the nine districts, which itself are divided further down to the smallest level of townships, called Tehsil. The largest city, and the corporate hub of Tersten, South Harelstone, is located in the heartlands of Yukela. The Yukela Pradesh is the governing body in the region, controlling the entire area and representing its people in the Republic of Tersten. Its current Governor is Sonia Bhattacharya.
Yukela
Yukela is a large wooded region located in South-East Tersten. The region is shielded by large mountains to the north, east, and west , with the South Tersten Sea located in the south-west. It is the most inaccessible of all regions on Tersten, with only a few mountain passes connecting the region by land, most transport is done via ship to Port John and then overland through the regions only major highway system into Yukela proper, though the Hanur Gap. Yukela refers to the region between the western edge of the Pearlstone Mountains, and the eastern side of the Yukela Mountains. Much of the Yukela region is forested, but large areas of land have been cleared for both farming and industrial development. Urban buildup is common throughout the entire region, with numerous towns and smaller cities settled across the land. The largest lake in the region is the Lake of Tranquility, named by several former Luna colonists who settled in the area under the influence of the People's Republic. It lies slightly north of South Harelstone, and is connected via the Ishinga River downstream, where it joins the main Ashinga River out into the South Tersten Sea. The South Tersten Sea is a freshwater body located in the south-east, and supports a large fishing industry in the area. It has three sizable islands, all of which are inhabited. The region is home to countless cities, many of which were settled during the reign of the People's Republic of Lordania, from 2260 to 2280. The most important of these are:- South Harelstone The capital of the region, a vibrant and bustling metropolis that has developed rapidly over the past 30 years since its founding, largely due to the sponsoring of various corporations, who have bought up vast areas of land all across the Yukela Pradesh.
- Kharseng The former capital of the Democratic Republic of Padrauna, Kharseng is an older settlement dating back to the mid 2240s, founded by escaped penal colonists who made the extremely long journey from Harelstone to Yukela. Notable for its large Sikh population, its most famous resident is also its former President, Kanur Rashid.
- Lawa The coastal city of Lawa used to be the stopping point of the Lawa Expanse, a long distance road connecting various mountain settlements such as Bantol and Jatan, on the other side of the Hanur Gap. As a part of the Yukelan Pradish, it is mostly known today for its fishing industries, as well as its hiking trails throughout the Yukela mountains.
- Ranganati Ranganati is the capital of the Duliajan District, which lies at the western edge of the Pearlstone Mountains, where they merge into the Yukelas. The city is settled at the mouth of the Irwanda River, which flows up from the mountains into the South Tersten Sea. Largely built along both sides of the river mouth, the city is well known for its military production, as many military corporations have set up shop in this area.
- Zazi Zazi was founded in 2279 by various peoples opposing the People's Republic on the south banks of the Pradhan Lake, roughly 230km west of South Harelstone. Initially, it served as a base of operations and refugee camp for the local resistance, it has grown significantly in the post-war years into a liberal and multicultural city, populated by Tersteners from all over the planet.
- Walong Walong is a large city in the Hanur Gap, a sizable dip in the mountains blocking access into Western Tersten, as such, it is an important transport link on the land routes out of Yukela, and because of this, has often been called the 'Gateway to Yukela'. Historically, the city of Walong fell to local anarchy in 2279 following the retreat of Unitarian forces into the heartland of Yukela. In the absence of local government, the city, as well as the Hanur region, was plagued with bandit and outlaw groups, and many different bands of people fought over control of the city. The most notable of these was in 2280, when Selenga Ootung and the Morita Sisters launched an attack to seize control of the city. The city was liberated by the Tersten Army in 2283.
Donaghadee Peninsula
The Donaghadee Peninsula is a temperate region in Yukela, located on the west coast of the South Tersten Sea. It is home to the largest concentration of Irish-Tersteners on the planet, and is considered by many to be a New Ireland of sorts. It has its own local government alongside the Yukela Pradesh, with its largest cities being Carran and Lehinch.Greenstone Valley
The Greenstone Valley is the westernmost region of Yukela Pradesh. It takes its name from the abundance of green minerals and rocks present across this part of the planet, present in many outcroppings and cliff faces. The Copper River that flows through the entire valley towards Port John and White Ocean gets its name from the large amounts of sediment and deposits that gives the river its jade-like appearance. Greenstone Valley's largest city is Port John, followed by the city of Coppersmouth. North of Port John is the Yukela Mountains. They are largely impassible from east to west, but many trails and passages run north to south. Settlements within the mountains are rare, with the city of Mapuraray being the most populous city in the Yukela Mountains. The most important locations in Greenstone Valley are:- Port John Port John is the capital of the Greenstone Valley region. It is located on the coast of the White Ocean, and is one of the most populated cities in South Tersten. Settlement at the mouth of the Green River dates back to the early days of the People's Republic, serving as vital stop on the transocean shipping lanes. Port John is the third-busiest port on Tersten, behind the Port of White Ocean and the Harlottsville Seaport. Prior to the construction of the South Harelstone Spaceport, from Port John up the Green River and through the Hanur Gap was the quickest way of reaching Yukela.
- Coppermouth Coppermouth lies just downstream of the source of the Green River, where it disappears into the Yukela Mountains. The city of Coppermouth is the last settlement before the Hanur Gap and Walong. Like the Donaghadee Peninsula, Coppermouth has become home to a sizable community of Irish-Tersteners. Coppermouth is famed for its biscuit and confectionary production, with Coppermouth Candy being the prime export of the city, across all of Tersten and even off-world.
- Green River-Tobago Green River-Tobago is the result of a merger between two townships, Green River and Tobago, in 2300. The city is considered by many to be reminiscent of the Mediterranean on Earth, as the city is blend of Hispanic, Italian, Arab, Turkic, and Greek cultures. The city's most popular export is tobacco, as the limited land around the city is rich in nutrients brought down from the mountains by the river, making it an ideal place for commercial crop growth. This region by and large does not have enough arable land for food production, and often relies on imported produce from the Yukelan Heartland.
- Mapuraray Mapuraray is a large city high in the Yukela Mountains. It is situated at the base of the Western Advance, a series of snow-capped mountains that is not considered a part of the Greater Yukelan Range. Nobody really quite knows when the city was settled, but it began life as a refugee camp and base of operations for the Tersten Government-in-Exile in the early years of the occupation. It is one of the few places on Tersten where Yak and Goats are the dominant livestock.
- Logan Logan is a small town situated on the border between Greenstone Valley and Yukela, located at the far end of the Northern Corridor of the Hanur Gap. Logan is often considered the last of the 'Tersten Boomtowns' - communities established as mining towns, either by the People's Republic or earlier. The town is closely connected to the Logan Mesa Mines, which run under the town. The mines produce vast quantities of silver bullion for the Tersten economy. The town became semi-infamous as the last stand of the Morita Sisters, led by Selenga Ootung, the Khanum Cowgirl.
Fauna & Flora
Like much of Tersten's woodland areas, Yukela is home to a variety of animals, both native and imported to Tersten. Marsupials and rodents are prevalent across the region, often competing with the native Tersten equivalent. An example would be the Tersten Desert Rat, a skinless, four-eyed rodent that inhabits areas of the Hanur Gap and Sahamptha Desert, which has seen an explosion in population due to the import of fast breeding prey such as spiders, snakes, and smaller rodents.
The most known of all native animals is the Yukelan Brown Bear. Though it is technically not a member of the Ursidae family, it possesses similar features -Plantigrade, Mammalian features, and fur- to be mistaken as such by the general public. The Yukelan Brown Bear is known for its size, slightly bigger than the average grizzly, with an extremely long tongue much like a sun bear. It is omnivorous with a preference for berries, ants, and insects. While protective of its young and territorial, these bears do not consider humans a threat, and have been known to rarely approach humans for assistance and pettings, displaying a level of intelligence on the level of dogs.
