Tersten City
Tersten City is the capital of the Republic of Tersten, and second most-populated city on Tersten. The city is the hub of a larger metropolitan area settled on the banks of the Takiwerk River. It is located in Tersten County, in the Calian geographic region.
Tersten City was founded in 2253 as Freetown by prominent prisoner-politician Jonathan Tersten. Fifteen miles west of modern Tersten City lies Harelstone, site of the Harelstone Prison and today preserved as a museum and exhibition site. The Prison served as the planet's first and primary penal colony from 2235 to 2253, when a devastating fire ruined most of the building. Leading the survivors east, Jonathan Tersten settled by the banks of the Takiwerk River, establishing the Republic of Pinascimate. Today the modern Senate building stands across the street from the original, which was destroyed in 2278. Upon Tersten's death in 2255, the city and planet were renamed in his honour.
Government
Tersten City government consists of a council with representatives from each district serving in a legislative and oversight capacity. In addition, the people elects a popular mayor who serves as the head of city government. Each representative serves an eight-year term.
Defences
The city maintains a large police force, and is surrounded by an outdated defensive wall and AA defences. Much of this was constructed during the reign of the People's Republic of Lordania. Large parts of the defences built during this time were deconstructed in the demilitarization period between 2283 to 2293. Outside of the city, parts of these structures and towers were deemed unsuitable for deconstruction and have been redeveloped into housing and community centres.
Infrastructure
Tersten City is serviced by the Tersten Spaceport, thirty miles south of the City in a protected region. Civic law restricts any buildings above 12 stories from being constructed within 13 miles of the starport. Many of the people who work at the Starport live in the nearby Starport City, a satellite town of Tersten City.
