Cromital

Cromital was founded centuries ago, during the expansion of early northern settlers seeking to establish a foothold in the harsh, icy expanse of what is now the Snowcloak Dominion. Nestled between the Snowveil Mountains and a vast frozen expanse, its location was chosen for both its defenses and access to natural resources. The convergence of trade routes, flowing up from the Wesmant and Esmant mountain passes and across the icy plains, made Cromital an ideal site for a burgeoning settlement.

The city began as a fortified trading outpost, constructed with sturdy stone quarried from the surrounding mountains. Over time, it grew into a vital hub for trade, culture, and governance. Its mastery over frost-enchanted metallurgy, particularly the refinement of cryo-mithral, established Cromital as an economic powerhouse, attracting artisans, merchants, and scholars. Once the city attracted spellcasters in sustainable numbers, they began training pyromancers with the goal of melting out Lake O'trevir from the icy wastes north of the city, and melting rivers out from the lake to the Prost Ocean. This access to the ocean has cemented the city as a profitable hub for years to come.

Growth into the Capital

As the Snowcloak Dominion began to unify under a single banner, Cromital's strategic location and economic prowess made it the natural choice for the capital. The rulers at the time invested heavily in expanding the city’s infrastructure, including the famed Frostspire Citadel, which served as both a palace and a fortress. Under their rule, Cromital became a beacon of stability and innovation, its influence radiating across the Dominion.

Over centuries, the city's population swelled, and it grew into a sprawling metropolis, famed for its skilled spellcasters and magic. The proximity of the Hoarwood, with its ancient trees and mystical aura, further enriched Cromital’s prominence, providing both resources and an air of mythic significance.

Cultural and Political Importance

Cromital remains the heart of the Snowcloak Dominion, a city where tradition and innovation coexist. Its citizens take great pride in their heritage, viewing their capital as a symbol of humanity's triumph over the harsh elements. Despite its grandeur, Cromital is a city of contrasts, with whispers of dissent simmering beneath its icy surface, especially among those sympathetic to the Eladrin cause or wary of the crown’s growing power.

The conquest of the Hoarwood and the uneasy integration of its Grove into the kingdom have left lasting scars on the city’s history. Yet, for better or worse, Cromital continues to thrive as a bastion of frost-bound power and a testament to the resilience of the Snowcloak Dominion.

Industry & Trade

Cromital stands as the heart of the Snowcloak Dominion’s economy, acting as both an industrial powerhouse and a center for magical commerce. Its wealth flows from its control over cryo-mithral, which is harvested in Cro's Mine and then is refined and utilized by artificers and enchanters in the city. The Crystal Anvil serves as the only magical shop servicing the common people with cryo-mithral goods, with most items being restricted to the royal military, Nightfeathers, and Arcane Vigil, ensuring the Dominion maintains its supremacy over the resource.

Beyond cryo-mithral, Cromital’s economy is diversified through hunting, ice fishing, and fur trading, which sustain the population and provide valuable trade goods. Hunters harvest resources from the terrible creatures of the icy wastes to the north of the city, bringing things like remorhaz glands back to the city. Ice fishermen in the Lake O'trevir harvest deep-dwelling fish, a staple food in the Dominion, while fur trappers from the surrounding wilderness supply the city with thick pelts used for clothing and bedding.

Cromital also serves as a mercantile hub, thanks to the man-made canals connecting it to Graepor and the open sea. Imported goods from the south—such as grains, fruits, wines, and luxury textiles—arrive via the two mountain passes running along the Snowveil Mountains, providing essential resources that cannot be produced in the frozen north. In exchange, the Dominion exports the simplest of its cryo-mithral components like rings of cold resistance, as well as magically preserved fish and meats.

Trade is strictly regulated by the ruling House Eber, who impose heavy tariffs on all cryo-mithral items leaving the Dominion to maintain their monopoly. Various guilds in the city hold sway over internal commerce, negotiating deals with nobles and regulating supply chains to prevent market collapses.
