House Ulvenash
House Ulvenash is the most secretive of Cromital noble families, rarely seen in court and even more rarely mentioned in the taverns or theaters. Where other houses grow their influence through trade, warfare, or arcane prestige, Ulvenash trades in silence, mystery, and land.
They are notoriously isolationist, declining invitations to public events, refusing to engage in most economic politics, and maintaining large, quiet estates across the frozen wilderness of the Dominion's northwestern reaches. Despite their absence from political affairs, their holdings span more square miles than any other noble house, second only to the monarchy itself. This includes ruined fortresses, glacial valleys, and long-forgotten wayposts, all still formally claimed under ancient charter.
The house’s sigil—the white tree growing from a skull—is said to be ancient, unchanged since their founding. Their words, “What is buried is not forgotten,” are often repeated in jest by common folk who assume the family lives in crypts and talks to ghosts. Whether or not that's far from the truth is uncertain.
Structure
- Lady Serath Ulvenash (Matriarch) – Rarely seen outside her ancestral manse, Lady Serath is said to have ruled the family for over seventy years, though she appears no older than forty. Her speech is measured, her tone distant, and her gaze... wrong.
- Veylin Ulvenash (Scholar-Magus) – A gaunt and quiet man who sometimes appears at arcane symposiums. Known for papers on ruins and The Weave, Veylin is tolerated in magical academia but never invited to speak twice.
- Ilma Ulvenash (Ranger of the North) – The only member of the family known to range beyond their lands, Ilma is a lone tracker seen moving through the frozen wilds with a black wolf companion. She sometimes appears in remote towns, purchasing books or supplies without a word.
- Household Servants – No one knows the names of their stewards, and their house guards wear faceless steel masks.
History
How They Acquired the Land
Centuries ago, the lands now claimed by Ulvenash were part of a failed colonization effort by an ancient expansionist ruler. When the outer provinces were abandoned due to magical storms and monstrous attacks, most noble families ceded their claims. But House Ulvenash bought the deeds at low cost, claiming the inhospitable terrain as their ancestral duty to "remember what was lost."
They never sold any of it. They simply vanished into the frost, with tales of manors carved into cliffs, watchtowers buried beneath snow, and crypts sealed with ice-runes.
Some believe their holdings contain ancient ruins, remnants of civilizations predating the Dominion, or that they are hiding deep ritual sites used for magical study—or worse.
