The Weave

The Weave is an intricate, ordered source of energy that permeates the world, invisible yet present in all things. It serves as the foundation of all magic, enabling spells and other magical phenomena. Creatures bound to the Weave can manipulate it to produce effects by channeling its arcana. This manipulation requires specific methods—spoken incantations, material components, and precise gestures—each of which coaxes the Weave into spilling its energy into the world. Creatures with innate magical abilities, such as sorcerers, dragons, and some fantastical beasts, access the Weave instinctively, using physical, mental, or wilful mechanisms to direct its flow.

The Weave behaves like a living, reactive tapestry of energy, with every act of magic pulling and twisting its threads. While powerful, it is neither infinite nor invulnerable, and excessive manipulation can fray or damage its structure.

The Divine's Creation and Warning

The Divine created the Weave not as a gift for His creatures but as a mechanism to support the ordered universe. It was not intended for direct use by living beings, and its power was forbidden to them. The Divine created the first creatures unbound from the Weave, granting them souls unsullied by its influence. These souls, meant to be eternal and whole, were designed to remain untouched by the Weave’s consuming energies.

The Divine charged His creations:

You must not bind yourself to the great weave of magic; for in the day that you are bound you will surely die.
— Divine

The warning was clear. To draw upon the Weave required binding one’s soul to it—a dangerous act that tethered an eternal essence to an insatiable force.

The Binding of Souls

When the first humanoids and serpents chose to bind themselves to the Weave, they tied pieces of their souls to its threads, creating an unbreakable link. The amount of soul bound to the Weave determines the depth of one’s access to its power. Those who gave more of their soul could wield greater magic but at a greater cost to their essence.

The serpents—later transformed into dragons—made the ultimate sacrifice. Once the humanoids unlocked the Weave’s potential, the serpents surrendered their entire souls to it, gaining unfathomable power at the price of eternal separation from the Divine. Their complete soul-binding also allowed them to access some of the Weave’s deepest recesses, enabling their immense magical might but condemning them to a cursed existence.

This act had far-reaching consequences. All creatures born after the first bindings inherited a connection to the Weave, but they did not inherit control over how much of their soul was tied to it. Most humanoids have only a small fraction of their soul bound, allowing them to live relatively normal lives, but others, like sorcerers or those born into magical lineages, find themselves with deeper, more costly connections they did not choose.

Damage to the Weave

The Weave is not indestructible. Intense magical events, reckless experimentation, or widespread corruption can fray or tear its threads, creating zones of instability. These areas, known as Weave Scars, exhibit unpredictable magical phenomena. Within a Weave Scar, spells may behave erratically—becoming more powerful, entirely failing, or producing unintended effects. In some cases, the Weave in a region becomes completely nullified, rendering all magic inert.

Weave damage can also affect creatures whose souls are bound to the damaged area. These individuals might suffer from unstable magic, lose access to their abilities, or develop strange mutations as their connection to the Weave becomes warped. Sadly, damaging the Weave fails to free a creature's soul, as the binding is upheld beyond the most physically observable parts of the Weave.
