House Grenmere

Once among the most lauded defenders of the Snowcloak Dominion, House Grenmere earned its fame during the wars against the Skjolgardt, where its knights led fierce charges into enemy ranks, defending frontier towns and holding icy passes when all others had fled. For a time, they were celebrated as paragons of loyalty and valor, their banners cheered throughout Cromital and the outer provinces.

But time has not been kind.

In the years following the war, the Dominion shifted focus—from valor in the field to magic, politics, and noble intrigue. The Nightfeathers became the kingdom’s celebrated champions, and deployments of Cryo-mithral regiments soon dwarfed the capabilities of martial houses. Arcane orders and merchant houses eclipsed Grenmere’s traditional influence. Their holdings shrank. Their martial academies emptied. Their coffers dried.

Now, House Grenmere is a shadow of its former self—still respected, but increasingly ceremonial, unable to maintain the power or prestige they once held. Their fortress, sits on the edge of Cromital's military district, more a museum than a stronghold.

Yet they endure. And they burn with quiet desperation to reclaim their place.

Structure

  • Lord Halric Grenmere (Patriarch) – A once-great warrior now gone gray and stiff with age, Halric still wears his armor daily, if only to remember what it felt like to be needed. He is proud, principled, and slow to admit the family’s decline, though the weight of it crushes him.
  • Dame Avelyn Grenmere (Eldest Daughter) – A fierce and stubborn knight, Avelyn is the last true warrior of the house, still venturing beyond the city when rumors of threats arise. She is deeply honorable, but blind to political nuance. Her methods are blunt, but effective.
  • Ser Deyric Grenmere (Youngest Son) – Bookish and melancholic, Deyric was never suited to knighthood, much to his father’s dismay. However, he understands politics, coin, and records, and believes the family might find redemption not through war, but diplomacy or reform.
  • Old Ser Thomrick (House Swordmaster) – A retired knight from the wars, now the family’s sword trainer. He drinks too much and talks too loud, but is still a deadly force with a blade. His bitterness toward “magic knights” is no secret.

Public Agenda

House Grenmere is desperately seeking a way to restore their honor and standing. Their options are few: marry into a more powerful house, reclaim old battlefield glories, or secure some singular victory that would make the Dominion remember who they once were.

Their remaining knights still train daily, polish their armor, and march in ceremonies, but they long for real war—or at least a chance to prove themselves again.

They have mixed feelings toward the Nightfeathers. On one hand, they respect the order’s strength; on the other, they quietly resent the arcane-infused warriors who have replaced traditional knighthood in the public eye.
