Skjolgardt

The Skjolgardt are a diverse and fractious coalition of Viking-like clans, sharing a common cultural heritage rooted in seafaring, battle, and reverence for elemental forces. However, the Skjolgardt are defined as much by their rivalries as by their shared traditions, with clans often clashing over territory, resources, and honor. These clans vary in their lifestyles, with some focused on seafaring and others on land-based strength. Their rivalries and alliances shape the volatile and dynamic politics of the Skjolgardt.

Origins and Culture

The name "Skjolgardt" derives from ancient words meaning "shielded realm," a reference to their legendary homeland—a rugged archipelago protected by fierce seas and towering cliffs. This homeland is sacred to all clans, though the Skjolgardt clans spread across the northern regions, bringing their raiding, trading, and warring ways wherever they settle.

The Skjolgardt way of life centers on the three pillars of their culture:

  1. The Oath: A vow of loyalty to one’s clan above all else.
  2. The Blade: A symbol of personal honor and strength.
  3. The Sea: The ultimate judge, providing both bounty and peril.

Structure

The Skjolgardt consist of multiple competing clans, each led by a Jarl who claims sovereignty over their people. The clans are loosely united by a shared mythology and occasional pacts during external threats, but betrayal and raiding between clans are common. The list of clans include the Hittarim, Gyrgoth, Amarul, Canaer, Perazkar, Hivar, and Jebal clans.

Once every decade, the clans convene at the Hall of Broken Shields, a neutral ground where grievances are aired, and temporary alliances are formed. However, this gathering often ends in bloodshed, as unresolved feuds spill into the halls.

Religion and Beliefs

The Skjolgardt hold deep respect for the natural elements, with storms, fire, ice, and the sea occupying central roles in their spirituality. While many clans incorporate these forces into their identities, some also honor ancient beings such as the Genies of Logos, whom they regard as embodiments of primal power. Despite their respect, they maintain a wary distance, as their culture warns against depending too heavily on external forces.

Current State

The Skjolgardt are scattered and divided, but their strength lies in their adaptability and ferocity. Some clans thrive as mercenaries for foreign kingdoms, while others carve out isolated domains, defending their autonomy against all comers.
