The United Clans of Mirathis

The United Clans of the Kingdom of Mirathis, represents the culmination of the various dwarven clans of the Underdark. Untied in their distrust of their distant cousins of Gittimoore, the clans struggle to gain the favor of the High King.

Culture

The dwarves are are known for their stubbornness, a trait that Mirathis holds in high regard and wich they are very proud. Much of their culture is based around the clans and it’s honor. Although they all serve the king, each member of the has strong to loyalty to the personal clans and the families that make them. Rivalry between the clans is very common, and on a few occasions the clans have even fought one another because of some ancient slight. The dwarves are a prideful people and very close minded to the other races and ideas.   Many ceremonies are based around clan honor and rights to wealth. The head of dwarven trade caravans are normally gifted a portion of the cargo in payment of transport. A small tithe is also normally given at shrines of Cyphus to bring good fortune before any trade negotiation or deal is made. Before battles between clans it is a sacred tradition that at least one peace talk is held between the clan leaders. Many times they end badly, yet every so often to avoid war, a challenge between the clan’s champions is fought instead.

Public Agenda

The Mirathi have long sough to bring their unruly cousins back into their fold. They have no formal relations with Gittimoore or the other nations of the Empire for these reason. Outside of this "Oldest Grudge", the nation focus on its own affairs and the acquisition of wealth. They have promoted friendly terms and relations with both the Leagallan Aristocarcy and the Sultante of Selwen as trade with these nations is paramount to Mirathis.

History

The history of Mirathis is one of conflict and wealth. It is hard to find a point in history where they have not been in some form of war. More often than not it is a clan versus another clan. Much of their history involves conflict with their cousins in Gititmoore. The dwarves have constantly been expanding their tunnels seeking to expand and create more entrance to their kingdom to increase trade, this has lead to heated interactions with nations above and monsters below.

Demography and Population

The vast amount of citizens in Mirathis are dwarves. While all citizens have rights, due to the clan and familal culture of Mirathis, dwarves are the first class citizens and everyone else is secondary, there are some major exceptions to this however. Gnomes make up a sizable portion of the population as well, many forming their own clans, or being absorbed into the dwarven clans.

Military

The fighting force of these dwarfs are renown for their tenacity and their stubbornness. Using the forges, the clans are some of the best equipped fighting force. Each clan raise their own private army to protect their holding and fight against Mirathis’ enemies. Every dwarf spends sometime in the clan’s fighting forces beginning at a young age. During major conflicts the house leader leads their warbands and serve the king. Sadly for them grudges between the clans remain strong and often undermine the unity of larger warhosts.

Technological Level

The level of technology in the nation is high compared to its neighbors. Mixing both arcane runes and their expert engineers, have brought forth some of the finest, and most bizzare machinery the whole of Gromlin have seen to date, with the exception of maybe their cousins in Gittimoore.   There is one clan in the Flyris Peaks that has a extreme disdain of magic and the arcane and focus on its technilogical development. They are likely the most advance of various clans in Mirathis.

Religion

Although not a very religious people, the dwarves of Mirathis always seek the god’s favor in all endeavours. They are superstitious when it comes to the gods. The most popular deities are Unzir the god of the forge and Pughphy goddess of vengeance. Shrines to Unzir are found in every smithy and forge. Before battle a ceremony is held to honor Rubicon the god of battle. While most dwarf tradesmen are usually found carrying a totem to Cyphus god of trade, chance, and wealth.

Foreign Relations

Mirathis is somewhat isloationist. When it comes to its neighbors or indeed any interaction with the "surface dwellers" they are suspicious and guarded. Trade is the only formal interaction with the other nations in Gromlin. However this is not true when it comes to Gittimoore, with who they have a type of cold war. Open conflict has yet to happen as Mirathis doesnt want the entire Empire of Plutoria to come knocking at their doors. Yet small hostile actions, such as theft, assaults and more, are common and usually waved off as minor at best and a old family squabble at worst.

Laws

The enforcement of the various laws are maintained by each clans household guard. Minor laws vary from town to town depending on the clans that rule over them. Family honor his held in high regard, and slights against it are quickly avenged. Outsiders are treated with grave suspicion and are usually blamed for any wrong doing in the cities. Rarely does any altercation or accusations of an outsider lead to anything more than banishment from their settlement.   Grudges are the rule of law among the whole of the united clans. Grudges can form for many slights or offenses and are kept by an elder of a clan. When it comes to dwarves, pride often comes in and descerns the punishment to be dealt out in a grudge. Should another clan disagree that the "punishment doesnt match the grudge", they have the right to Arbitration. The Arbitration is a type of trial, not to determine guilt or the facts of the matter, but what kind of punishment or reinbursment is called for.

Agriculture & Industry

Mining opperations are in an abundace within the tunnels of the United Clans, for every type of ore imaginable.   While there are very few farms in the underground domains of the underdark the United Clans make strong efforts culticate some for of vegetation. This has created large farms of mushrooms or oddly root vegetables.

Trade & Transport

Trade is very important not only with its neighboring nations, but between the clans as well. Some clans no longer have permant homes but now vast roaming caravans that act a cargo haulers and mercchants for the United Clans. Some of these clans even have access to the famed Bulwarks, massive armored wagons that carry whole famlies with its goods.

Education

Schools fill every community, including the traveling clans, but they tend to focus more on trade or practical needs. A prime example of this would be that the most honored teachers are not called professors, but instead called engineers. While therory, philosphy are lauded, it is the engineers, architects, and forgers that have the most respect.

Infrastructure

Roads, towns and transport is some of the most advance on the contient. The largest citis even having automated stairs and walkways.

While they do forge many of the refined items and sell them off as well, it is these raw materials that sustain the clans. One more recent addition would be gravixis; the crystals that help in the building of the Selwenese air ships.   Clan Peakworks also tends to export some of its more refined, anti-magic technology at high prices.
