Duncan Colbreak Whitewave

His Most Honored Eminence the Duke Duncan (né Redbreak) Colbreak Whitewave (a.k.a. The Dissipator)

Best known as the Dissipator, Duncan Colbreak led his elite squad to the very edge of Shui Lu's Holy Waters to avenge his parents and to save Crathlia from the naered. It is often said that he killed the most naered of any human being who has ever lived, though this is a difficult claim to prove given the lack of records from the colonization. Still, credit where credit is due, he certainly holds that title when considering only modern humans.   After the Great War's conclusion, my uncle was left the unlikely Duke of Colbreak. As part of that responsibility, he currently lives in Lexport, even if he'd prefer to live in the countryside where he was born and raised.   As Duncan is my uncle, I'll perhaps be able to provide more insights into his personal life than others, though he is quite free and frank in interviews.

Personal History

Early Life

Duncan Redbreak Colbreak was born into the Colbreak Clan to Alana Redbreak and Matthew Colbreak. My father Alistair followed him two years later. Both boys were raised in the rural Green Mountains on historical Redbreak land near the town of Mountain Home, where they attended the public primary school. There, Duncan befriended the local Dregs, since he hadn't surged yet and thus was seen by the young students as being more analogous to the powerless children than those who had been levitating objects since they were toddlers.
Oh, yeah, the first time I learned how to fight, it was with my fists. I learned from my Dreg friends. And we fistfought any kid that was mean to one of ours. You know, back when I dueled at Everdon, I'd punch 'em in the face. Catch 'em off guard - they'd never been punched before. Didn't work so well with gifted humans though.
— Duncan Colbreak, on his childhood

Education

As the child of two nobles, it should have been no surprise when Uncle Duncan scored above the Everdon threshold. However, after spending his early years interacting with no other nobles, it was a difficult thing for him to adjust to on the level of personal perception. To add to this, his classmates and teachers generally viewed him along rural stereotypes: unintelligent, ignorant, and unworthy of their time.

In response to this view, Uncle Duncan gave up on school and instead spent most of his time with his friends: his roommate Kyle Stelworth Blackburn and the biracial younger student Ophelia Al Anbar Evenbrook, my mother. All three were outcasts in their own ways. Duncan was seen as more of a Dreg than a noble, Kyle preferred Duncan's company over his former friends he'd grown up with in High Valley, and my mother experienced racism due to her ability and appearance.   To this day, it is remembered at Everdon and in our family that Duncan and Kyle competed to see which of the two could get the lowest personal appearance scores, wearing swimming clothes to class, wearing their uniforms in the most incorrect ways possible, etc. They had detention practically daily.
Just before Uncle Duncan's graduation, his parents were killed by naered in the Great War's first battle on Crathlian soil. Duncan, his best friend, and his brother joined the army in hopes of vengeance.

Great War

Uncle Duncan and my father began the Great War attempting to avenge their parents. Their unit killed so many naered that they became the first human group to be named by the naered: The Dissipators.   With his ability of mist manipulation, Uncle Duncan was able to manipulate the material that makes up naer bodies--rending them apart with hand movements alone. Furthermore, in convergence with Kyle Blackburn, the two could turn naered to steam, killing them instantly. Uncle Duncan was therefore the most deadly of his unit and is referred to as the Dissipator.

Marriage and Children

Double Wedding by ReachingForStardust
During the war, much of the Colbreak Clan was wiped out, leaving Uncle Duncan as the Duke of Colbreak. Lillian Whitewave, the former betrothed of the deceased heir to the Colbreak Clan, remained living, and she made quick plans to marry the new duke.   After a brief engagment period, Uncle Duncan and Aunt Lillian married in a double wedding alongside my mother and father on Tinegal 3, 1294, pictured at right (Uncle Duncan is in the back row, second from the left).   The couple has two children: twins Marcus Whitewave Colbreak and Cathleen Whitewave Colbreak. Uncle Duncan would much prefer to spend his time with them rather than govern the Duchy of Colbreak, but social unrest in Lexport requires that he spend much of his time there. Even so, he generally allows others to make his decisions for him, not trusting his own judgement in politics.

Social

Contacts and Relations

Uncle Duncan is firstly close friends with his fellow Dissipators Kyle Blackburn and Vincent Bowman, who jointly rule the Duchy of Blackburn. His connections to the rest of the nobility come entirely through his wife, who is close friends with Senator Clarisse Alderley and Queen Alexandra Alderley, among others.   Across the aignaoi-influenced world, most leaders would certainly want a connection and association with one of the Dissipators. Thus Uncle Duncan, alongside his brother and other two comrades, often represents Crathlia internationally. The Lumen Empress in particular always invites the Dissipators anytime she invites any Crathlian to her palace.

Family Ties

We Crathlian nobles tend to put a heavy emphasis on clan loyalty, but Uncle Duncan takes family loyalty to a new extreme. His wife and children are the center of his life, and he is fiercely protective of his brother and extends that same protection to my immediate family.   On the other hand, he isn't particularly close to the other remaining branch of the Colbreak Clan given their role in the disownment of his father. He's not on bad terms with them, certainly, especially since they weren't alive when that happened, but they also wouldn't come to mind for him when one asks him to name his family. This is relatively unusual among Paragons, though acceptable due to the disownment and associated hard feelings. In any case, the majority of his Colbreak and Redbreak relatives were killed in the Great War, so his blood family is rather limited in size anyway.

It's often been said that Duncan is a much better fighter than a politician, and I certainly must agree. He always looks so uncomfortable and strange in suits and circlets. But I tend not to think of him in terms of the war photos that everyone's seen. The way I think of him is wearing a flannel and a floppy military hat, out fishing on a river or lake, parting the early-morning mist with his ability. He fries a great fish.

I love all the art, it really adds to the familial feel. He sounds like he's a good family man and has had an interesting life.

Thanks so much! The art is the product of several years of myself and my sister both loving Duncan haha. A good family man settling in after an exciting life is definitely the vibe with him :)

In Gormhan, an ancient magic-using nobility clings to its power in a high-tech 1950s-inspired world. There are dragons too!
