Chosen Monarch of Crathlia
This is the king or queen of the Kingdom of Crathlia who is not a member of the Alderley Clan. He or she is married to the Hereditary Monarch of Crathlia and has the secondmost authority in Crathlia. In modern times, this will be the highest-scoring person of the opposite sex within 5 years either direction of the Hereditary Monarch.
His or her role is supporting the Hereditary Monarch and assisting in the governance of Crathlia.
Requirements
Except in the event of the previous king and queen dying prior to the Hereditary Crown Prince(ss)'s marraige, the Chosen Monarch was previously the Chosen Crown Prince(ss) of Crathlia.
The method of choosing the Chosen Monarch is thus the same as choosing the Chosen Crown Prince or Princess. He or she must be the most powerful Crathlian noble of the opposite sex of the Herditary Monarch within five years either way of his or her birth. The decision to limit the selection to that narrow ten-year margin of age was traditional in order to increase the likelihood of producing an heir.
The determination of "most powerful" has varied throughout history. Since 1200, it has been defined by power level as tested through blood. Prior to that date, it was decided through dueling and other tests as determined by the royal family.
Appointment
The coronation of a Chosen Monarch takes place after the coronation of the Hereditary Monarch of Crathlia. Two possible scenerios exist.
If the Chosen Monarch-to-be was first the Chosen Crown Prince(ss) (i.e., he or she was married to the Hereditary Crown Prince(ss) before the death of the previous Hereditary Monarch), he or she will be coronated immediately after the Hereditary Monarch's coronation. He or she enters similarly attired to his or her spouse, wearing plain white with no ornamentation, and swears the same oaths as the Hereditary Monarch, echoing the responses with "As will I." He or she kneels at the alter in unison with his or her spouse, and the crown is placed on his or her head just after the Hereditary Monarch's.
If, however, the Chosen Monarch-to-be is marrying the Hereditary Monarch (i.e., the previous Hereditary Monarch died before the marriage of his or her heir), the coronation takes place as a part of the wedding ceremony, which must be officiated by the High Priestess. The nine oaths of royalty, along with the vow to produce an heir, are sworn by the Chosen Monarch-to-be after the marriage is sealed with convergence. He or she then kneels at the alter and is crowned.
