Spirit
A General Overview of Spirits in the Setting
Spirits are perhaps the most vulnerable entities you will ever encounter. Even in death, there is no escape from the constant torments of being pushed and pulled by the likes of demons and angels. Only deep in Etherius where the Reapers call home, can they find protection and peace.
Spirit Overview
For clarity, soul and spirit are synonyms in the Florenic context.
Origins
Every living creature has a soul innately because of the Planar Realm of Paradise. What foul entities seen among undead or twisted abominations are the subtle manipulations of the Null. You are either born anew with a soul or have reincarnated with a prior one.
Afterlife Explanation
During a creature's life, it will likely be sought after by the varying planar powers to align on their behalf. Should the creature dedicate the lifestyle that symbolizes that planar power, accruing affinity, it will find a home there in the afterlife. An easy example of this are clergy members in Faunerro's Church of the Reverie and divide between the Order of Candescence. The Reverie's members aspire to be like the kind and benevolent caels to help society and will very likely find peace in Haven. For the Candescent, though they are not a traditional religion with priests, they are still led by a cael. Sullus, their leader, wants them to live fulfilling lives so they can still attain the peace Haven has to offer.
The same occurs for those of darker planar powers. Those who allow themselves to be haunted by shades may become one themself. Should one cultivate Infernal affinity and become hyper-ambitious and selfish among their people, then demons await to welcome them to their fold.
But what about those who don't align with any of these planar powers, or even want to reject their influences? That is where the Reapers enter into the mix. They are those who seek to protect souls from exploitation and to allow them a peaceful rest. They do not seek worship or praise. Only the safety of the departed give them peace of mind.
Power of Souls
As a reminder, magic in the Florenic Worlds is about answering the question, "How well can you impose your will on the world?" Well, some of that willpower is still retained after death but is much harder to utilize, as being a spirit is like being in a dream-like mindset. This disoriented state makes it easier for powers, both mortal and planar, to exploit as they force souls into submission.
For light planar realms, they would rather call to spirits into harmony than bring them harm. Though, these intentions are not entirely "innocent". Oftentimes these are with the subtle intentions to bolster the strength of divine powers to better stand against demons, shades, and aberrants. Otherwise, it's for the sake of creating beautiful or orderly atmospheres.
Types of Spirits
Should one decide to submit to a planar power, there are different types of spirits one can become:
Planar Power | Spirit Type |
---|---|
Averse | Aberrant |
Dictation | Archon |
Elvarid | Fey |
Fell | Shade |
Haven | Angel |
Inferna | Demon |
