Mountain Elf

The Fae of the Snow

Mountain elves are a race of Elf that live in the mountains of Ghliteren .

Basic Information

General Features

Mountain elves are notable for being rather short for most elves. On average they range from 4-5 feet. They are visually reminiscent to the myth of 'Santa's Elves'. Mountain elves tend to be 'baby faced' and look very child like. Mountain elf men will often grow out their beard to lessen this effect.   Mountain elves tend to have fairer skin, often being extremely pale or even albino in some cases, and are more likely to have more human hair colors like blonde, brunette and red.

Special Skills

Mountain elves are known to have higher endurance than other races, and can climb or hike for longer periods of time. They are also more resistant to the cold due to the freezing temperatures that exist high up on the mountains.

History

Like many races mountain elves are the result of mixed genes of humans and fairies . Mountain elves seem to have more human like traits than any other race.   The mountain elves were indigenous to the mountain of Ghliteren for centuries before other races explored it, however, their villages were sparse and rural, and most did not venture far up the mountain do to it's harsh conditions. Those who did would do it for religious purposes, or to retrieve resources found only at higher points of the mountain.   Eventually the mountain elves would come into contact with other races, and they would assist them in exploring the mountain sides. With the help of these expedition groups, the mountain elves started settling higher and higher up the mountains, requiring more creative engineering to successfully build safe settlements so high up on the steep mountains, giving the mountain elves a reputation for being innovative crafters.

Culture

Culture and cultural heritage

The culture of the mountain elves are inspired by, and reminiscent of both inuit cultures and medieval Scandinavia, in the way they dress and the way they build their homes to keep warm and safe in the harsh cold of their homeland. The more advanced cities also have steampunk elements.

Religion

The Mountain elves value living off the land and respecting the mountains. In ancient times, they believed that the mountains were the burial grounds for ancient gods. They would build temples and shrines to pray to and thank the gods. Even today, during hikes up the mountain, it's considered polite to stop by any mountain shrine and perform a brief prayer to the mountains.   After Dualism spread to Ghliteren, the mountain elves used these shrines to pray to the Higher Angels of Fanenta instead. This is still quite a controversial issue, as more traditional tribes find the idea of using the shrines to pray to anything but the gods they were intended for to be disrespectful.

Technology

Over the years, mountain elves have become more innovative and technologically advanced. The conditions of Ghliteren force creative solutions to building functioning settlements higher on the mountain, and mountain elves have become the champions of engineering, being able to craft cities almost completely from scratch with minimal land usage, such as with a good percentage ofVariscite Peak being made out of wooden platforms and docks that extend off the side of a steep mountain.   Mountain elves also are the inventors of the Sky Sail a popular airship type uses to transport goods and large groups of people across massive distances between islands. Being it's inventors, mountain elves hold a bit of a monopoly on skysails, and most of the companies that fly them are hosted in Ghliteren.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Unlike other cultures of elves, which find femininity in both men and women to be attractive, the mountain elves are the opposite. Most mountain elves agree that someone who is strong, masculine and hard working are desirable traits.
