Sky Sail Vehicle in Fantasme Imagination | World Anvil

Sky Sail

"I thought I'd be more excited for my first Sky Sail ride, but honestly I was petrified the whole trip. You never realize just how high up the isles are until you are dangling above the clouds with nothing but a balloon and some supports keeping you from plummeting down into the abyss. it's quite nausiating.
— Faerin Leyric's Tour of the Floating Ilses

Build

Sky Sails are large, flying ships made from light weight material, hooked up to a large, blimp-like balloon which provides lift when inflated. The ship is steers with a compilation of sails and large propellers at the rear of the ship. Larger sky sails also require an engine that uses Orbitite to generate more upward lift for the heavier structure, orbitite being the same mineral that keeps the floating islands in the sky.   The deck below varies depending on size, but typically is used for storage and a place for crew and passengers to rest.

Docks

Docks are typically built as extensions off of the islands themselves, usually made from limestone, with sturdy supports connect to the island. Sky Sails have landing skids like a helicopter that allow them to land on flat surfaces, so the docks will usually have large empty spaces intended for the ships to land on.

Power Generation

The ships tend to use steam powered engines to inflate the balloon and run the propellers. Orbitite is also used in engines to make the ship more buoyant and lightweight in the sky.

Armor and defense

The hull of the ship is usually metal plated to prevent damage to the weaker wooden structure underneath. This is often painted and decorated with intricate trimming to keep the ship looking nice.   The ships are also equipped with canons that can generate Arcane Magic and for magic beams at any threats. The canons are powered by crystals which typically need to be recharged before firing again.

Sensors

Crystal orbs are typically used to allow the captain of the ship to see the immediate area around the ship in 3D space, allowing him to see if any threats are near by, or if a small island is drifting a bit too close for comfort.

History

Sky Sails were invented in Ghliteren, and were inspired by the existing Hot Air Boats, small single passagner boats that moved using hot air balloons. the Mountain Elves wanted to make a version of the hot air boat that was much larger in scale and could carry cargo and multiple passengers.   The first successful Sky Sails were build in the late 17th century, which dramatically improved trade and travel for the whole empire. Over the years the design was improved upon until the design most commonly used to this day was created in the late 1800's.   While it's possible for other nations to produce sky sails, most manufacturers of them are located in Ghlitteren.

Significance

Sky sails are crucial for the Empire to function they way it does, as it's the most effective way to carry large goods and groups of people across the floating isles safely. They are useful for traveling long distances, like across provinces.   Most tickets to board sky sails are relatively affordable, meaning it's easy for the average citizen to use them for travel, despite this, the ships are prone to attracting stowaways. The traditional punishment for this would be throwing the stowaway overboard, though this practice is considered barbaric in the modern age.
