Ruins of Budkin

This Dwarven city-state was founded in the First Age of Damus, on the northeast coast of the continent, under the cliffs of the Norstead Mountains. Its first rulers were the Silverforge clan, who merged/married into the Banrik clan of Mogeth after the Dwarves massive emigration.

The city consisted of only three leves - for example: most cities in Mogeth has five or more. On the first level, at the main gate, was the market and the commercial area, behind it the military buildings and the civilian apartments, the clan-houses. The second level (under the first one) was already off limits to strangers and visitors. Here were the Church of Jomril*, the workshops, most warehouses, and the city treasury. On the lowest level was the mine: iron, coal and mithral were mined under the mountains. The grand mine-system once extended under several mountain peaks.
At the time, Budkin was the largest steel and weapon trader in what is now the Tranquil Dale and the Windy Wilds. They regularly made business with the Surta elves.

When the Dwarves sailed away from Damus, the Elves tried to enter the city to get the supplies they had left behind to fight with the Segaii, but a Bugit tribe already overtaken them. The snake-bugits settled on the second level, and had almost completely looted the upper level by the time their rivals got there. The Beastman barricaded the roads and stairs leading to the deeper parts of the city and did not engage in a serious fight with the Elves.

They tactics proved successful only thanks to chance: Damus' Doom tore the city-state and its surroundings from its place. Most of the remaining area of the mine was flooded by the waters of the Blackwater. However, they were also far from the Elves.

They survived the eruption of the Pyrsoir in the depths and have been living there ever since. The Bugits still live on the second level, on the first level are only careless sentinels and rudimentary traps, since no one has attacked the city for decades. They ruler, Lamir, named himself a king, and now he is working to prepare his Bugits to claim the Firedragon's treasure hoard from the caves beneath the volcano. Lamir would probably hire adventurers to do the dirty work for them in exchange to a share of the treasure.

Author's Notes

* Dwarven cathedrals have a circular or octagonal plan and usually span several levels. On the middle of the lowest level is the sacrificial forge, and the ceremonies take place here. On the higher levels are galleries, from which you only can look down, but don't get down to the deeper part of the church, at most by jumping/climbing. In this way, the Dwarves who only visiting the city can also participate in the services.
