Ilnid Character in Emynea | World Anvil

Ilnid

Nesut/Mala-ik Ilnid (a.k.a. The Arenaceous / The Sabulous)

Ilnid is among the minor elements, the Aethid, and is the child of Rylis and Ylithuum. They are the element of sand, glass, quartz and silica. Much like his brother Ralgotar, and more than any of the other Aethids, Ilnid enjoys playing the part of and being regarded by humanity as divine. He rules as an immortal pharaoh amid the deserts of Alkelbulan. He has two seats of power, one in Kemet and one based near his Seat in Balkurtiz, Haramal. He seeks to expand his empire into all of the deserts of Emynea and to spread Islam al'Rasul into every corner of these lands, casting out any who reject this way of life.

Before the Kingdom of Accia began its conquest, Ilnid ruled over most of north Alkelbulan and was focused on spreading his influence north into the the Frozen Wastes. However, for the first time in centuries, a human kingdom pushed his influence back—Accia. He has been locked in a back and forth with the kingdom in a struggle for control over Shamsi Desert for some time. In the two hundred years the kingdom has struggled against him, they have finally managed to push him out of the Radiant Dunes.

Ilnid has come to respect the kingdom and especially King Ambrose Syltharis, recognizing his strength. They are negotiating an alliance and Ilnid has sent one of his (many) sons to join the Accian Military Training Program. Baahir Ilnidhotep reports back to his father often, telling him of his experiences and of the outside world. Like the rest of Ilnid's people, Baahir also reveres his father as divine. His children typically take on the surname Ilnidhotep and are called mesu-nesut.

Racial Manifestation

Much like their Erlithmanil parents, many Aethid have gifted lifeforms with their magic and even continue to do so at their discretion. Every lifeform on Emynea possesses two of these blessings. As these abilities are passed down from parent to child genetically, they came to call these gifts Racial Magic. These are named by the element a caster is connected to and by how they can use it, how they manifest their connection.

Manifestations

Manipulation
Able to manipulate, reshape and control sand, quartz and glass present in their environment.

Aura
Able to summon or generate sand, glass or quartz from Ilnid's Plane, emerging from their body or into an area around themselves.

Movement
Able to move on or through sand freely, swimming, stepping or flying through solid quartz or glass. They can use any of these materials as a solid foothold or move through solid materials as though it were water. They are also able to briefly turn into sand, traveling on the wind or through desert sands and reform elsewhere.

Eye
Able to see sand, glass and quartz in their environment over great distances and regardless of barriers.

Sense
Able to sense sand, glass and quartz in their environment, feel anything interacting with these materials. This works over long distances and despite barriers.

Skin
Can convert their skin into sand, quartz or glass, differing by individual. They can expand these into jagged glassy spikes, thick sandy insulation or tough quartz armor!

Touch
Can fossilize flesh via touch, mineralizing living cells and filling them with sand or quartz. The longer they can maintain contact, the further the effect spreads and the more pervasive the damage.

Craft
Able to craft, reshape or smith sand, glass and quartz with their bare hands without any need for tools or heat.

Blood
Sand runs through their blood. This makes them much heavier and the sand in their body absorbs shock and force well, making them hardier

Diet
Able to consume or absorb sand, quartz or glass as sustenance, to heal or to replenish magic energy.

Bone
The caster can either turn their bones into glass or quartz, common in invertebrates of the desert which gain exoskeletons comprised of glass or sand

Will
Can produce sand or glass which amplifies the magic of others upon contact or can extend this effect into sand already present.

Blade
Able to generate, summon or craft blades made glass or quartz, exact features differing by individual. These blades can extend out from their body, meld onto them, be thrown or pushed outward or some can even create actual wieldable weapons.

Breath
Able to exhale a cloud of sand and even sandstorms. Also able to breath without impediment in the harshest sandstorm and even when completely burried in sand or quartz.

Pocket
Able to create small portals into Ilnid's Plane big enough to reach their hand/arm inside and can place or remove small items from the plane. Alternately, they can use it as a source of their aspect, pouring out from their portal

Push
Can generate a pulse of sand , sharp glass shards or even generate a sandstorm with themselves as the epicenter

Sleep
They are able to induce a state of hibernation surrounding or engulfing targets in sand, glass or quartz like a cocoon, using this on themselves or on others. This hibernation is regenerative, useful for healing. They can keep a target in this state so long as they remain engulfed in this aspect. The caster can dispell the effect whenever they want but if left alone, they will remain in this state until their aspect is no longer present in their environment.

Shield
Immune to negative effects and/or damage from all Ilnid magic and naturally occurring sand, glass and quartz.

Vision
Able to enter a meditative state in which the caster can explore and peek through portals or windows within Ilnid's Plane

Step
Can enter and exit Ilnid's Plane via portals and travel the plane freely, without injury. Can bring another with them while maintaining contact or trap others inside.

Form
Can convert parts of their body into a kind of sand, glass or quartz or have these materials make up a part of their magic form.

Body
Able to totally convert their entire body into a kind of sand, glass or quartz. They can maintain a human shape or abandon it, melding with sand in their environment, travel along it and reform elsewhere. Anything which damages or alters the material they transform into will translate to lost flesh when they reform. Cannot be harmed by Ilnid magic or materials. This is considered the ultimate manifestation of Ilnid

This is the simplified explanation of these abilities. See Physical Manifestations for more details, limits and functions. Aasaru can wield all of these abilities and some others.

Personal history

Ilnid has always had a close relationship with his mother Ylithuum, sharing her passion for tradition and history. He was very delicate as a boy, before fully awakening as an Aethid. He spent much of his time perusing and studying his mother's private collection of historical texts and artifacts. He had always adores Masryeen history and culture but when he stumbled across his mother's copy of the original Quran, the last surviving copy, he was taken with it. He memorized it word for word.

by Lee Stepp

Once Ilnid fully awakened, he settled into the Arabiyyan Desert and began reciting verses of the original Quran, rather than Lithmor's adapted version, and quickly acquired a following. He came to be regarded by the Arabiyy as a mala'ikah, an angelic messenger of Allah. He competed with Lithmor for influence in Alkelbulan up until the Downfall of the Erlithmanil.
