Paqolns

The Paqolns1 were one of the earliest sapient species to inhabit Dragonía, appearing around the same time as the Ixpons and Knárs -with whom they shared the same territory- and Zúattans of the Múlíat Mountains to the far southeast.

Appearance and abilities

Paqolns were short, rather stocky bipedal beings of a lineage closely related to ungulates, and well adapted to the frigid environment they thrived in, being mostly covered in dense, white and pale brown fur, under which they had thick skin to protect their hands, feet and face from frostbite. Each limb ended on three digits, tipped with thick nails to aid digging through snow and permafrost in search for food.
They had a pair of large, conical horns growing out of their forehead, which along with a wide mouth and huge nostrils made the eyes tiny in comparison. Paqolns had poor eyesight, and thus relied more on their hearing or sense of smell.

History

The first Paqoln societies appeared during last ice, around 40.000 years ago, during which what is now the Plain of Spirits and Plain of Kings formed a massive woodland, of which Ela'k Forest and Kanix Forest are all that remains.
As the ice age come to an end, they gradually began to move further north as the forest gave way to grasslands and the summer heat became unbearable to them. The last Paqolns eventually perished on Krystó Ridge around 30.000 years ago.

Society

Paqolns were divided into semi-nomadic groups, with most men and women living separately throughout most of the year; the women lived in larger groups along with their children within a large territory, while the men were cast out as they came of age, after which they either wandered the woods alone or formed small communities for safety on the edges.
In the autumn, the men and women met for a few days, where the former would compete in various activities -including head-butting, wrestling and running- and the eventual victor was allowed to stay with the women's group for a time and become the father of its next generation.
