Ixpons

The Ixpons1 were among the earliest sapient species to appear in Dragonía -specifically the northern and eastern parts-, and their territory intersected those of the Paqolns and Knárs on one hand, and those of the Minotaurs on the other.

Appearance and abilities

Ixpons were related to the various felines found in the temperate and subtropical woodlands of western Dragonía, though they differed in being bipedal -though often ran on all fours-, much larger and sporting long, sharp canine teeth, which kept growing throughout their life. Dense fur covered their whole bodies, mostly white with irregular black and rusty red spots on the back of the head, shoulders, back, upper arms- and legs, and several dark bands on their relatively short tails.
They had excellent eyesight and hearing, which along with the whiskers ensured that very little in an Ixpon's surroundings escaped their attention.

History

Like most sapients that appeared during last ice age, the first Ixpon societies emerged around 40.000 years ago. They specialized in hunting large prey, including Antanas and wild cattle, both in the woodlands of northern Dragonía (now the Plain of Spirits and Plain of Kings) as well as the eastern part of the great tundra (now the Southern Desert), using various kinds of traps and ambush tactics.
Some Ixpons killed members of the other sapients who inhabited the same territory as well, though this was uncommon.
Their reliance on larger prey eventually lead to the Ixpons' downfall as the climate became warmer, which caused the forests to retreat and the tundra to transform into a savanna, and in turn, most of their favoured prey either migrated elsewhere or died out. Even as the Ixpons resorted to eating smaller animals instead, it wasn't enough to keep the fed, and their thick, white fur became a major hindrance at sneaking up on, chasing and taking down prey, and thus around 30.000 years ago the Ixpons were no more.

Religion

When mortally wounded or seriously ill, Ixpons instinctively left their tribe so they could die in peace if they had the strength to do so, or else abandoned as the group moved on, but those who met a sudden death were buried along with pine cones or ochre under a cairn. Most tribes lingered around the cairn for the rest of the day, during which members observed a strict ban on speaking or eating, as doing so was believed to interrupt the soul's passage to the afterlife.
