The Dun
Demographics
Most of the inhabitants are Gnomes .
There are also some Humans , mostly artists.
A lot of the restaurants are owned and run by Lizard Men
Industry & Trade
Most of the workshops in the Dun are creating new technological inventions and selling all sorts of gadgets and mechanical applications. They cooperate closely with the Academy and its scholars.
Quite a number of Lizardmen, who managed to escape the oppressive living conditions in the Warren, have also settled in the Dun and opened speciality restaurants, which have become very popular.
Brothels and gambling dens still exist, albeit much more discreet and high class. One of the most exclusive addresses is the Lucky Lady.
Infrastructure
Living up to the Lord Protectors expectations, the Gnomes have made full use of the new technologies and were the first to have street lights, elevators and a system of capsule pipelines for sending letters and small parcels between the houses. The Tram, which is only used in the main streets in the rest of the city, runs almost everywhere here. It does not stop, though. People just jump on and off.
Guilds and Factions
(The Gnomes have no official representation in the city. However the heads of the clans are in close contact with each other and manage the running of The Dun quite smoothly.) The Academy under Leonik Dahvinik also takes a strong interest in the Dun.
The Tinkerer's Guild and the Alchemist's Guild have both moved their headquarters to The Dun in the last 50years.
The Red Sun and other criminal organizations are heavily involved in running the brothels and gambling dens, but keep out of the business of the Gnomes.
History
The Dun used to be the entertainment district of Rhynmouth. It was called the West End and full of theatres, gambling places and brothels, catering to the wilder set of nobles and merchants. It all centred around the old The Cosmos Theatre and the Theatre Market
When the Lord Protector invited Leovin Dahvinik a 150 years ago and they built the Silver Spire in the North-West corner of Rhynmouth, they also brought with them a lot of Gnomes. Most of them settled around the new Spire and the neighbouring West-End. Soon Gnomes had spread all the way to the Cosmos Theatre. The atmophere of the district changed and it became known as the Dun, the quarter of the Gnomes. This was according to the plan of the Lord Protector, who had hoped for a clean up of the area. Still the plan turned out only partly successful. The seedier houses of pleasure were pushed out of the Dun, into the Warren, whereas the ones, that have remained, are much more discreet and cater to a more high class clientele.
Still, for Humans the Dun is not a respectable area to live in, the only ones residing there are actors and other artists. One of their favourite boarding houses is The Green House.
Tourism
The Dun is the entertainment district of Rhynmouth. A lot of people visit it to admire the Gnomish architecture and technological wonders. The speciality cuisine of the Lizard men restaurants, the Cosmos Theatre and other entertainment venues draw a hip, bohemian crowd.
In the North-West corner, close to the city wall the famous Silver Spire rises up, high above all other buildings in the city, except the Clifford. It is the centre of the Academy of Rhynmouth, which does not encompasses just the Spire itself, but many other faculty buildings, student accomodation, courtyards and parks.
The night caters for more shady customers, who visit the high class brothels and gambling halls.
Architecture
Traces of the old West-End can be seen mostly around the Cosmos Theatre and the Theatre Market. There the houses are distinctly human, even though they have been painted in the lively colours, the Gnomes love to use for their abodes.
The further West one travels, the more Gnomish dominated the district becomes, with multicolour houses, often 5 or 6 stories high.
Shops or workshops occupy the ground floor, the upper floors are residential apartments and shared by the Gnome clan. A lot of these houses are connected by bridges.
On the outskirts, close to the Northern wall, the Silver Spire and other Academy building change the atmosphere of the district again, conveying a much more tranquil mood.
