Introduction

A race of fey spirits, known for their mischievous nature, while being fiercely loyal to those they considered family and a part of their community. These creatures are vastly unique in their range of appearances and attitudes, typically insect-like or elvish-appearing. They embody the chaotic and whimsical nature of the Feywilds, and are often members of one of the fey Courts. These creatures are exceptionally bright and energetic; constantly at odds with boredom and thriving on excitement.
Pixie characters may originate from the Feywilds.

Society

The Mischevious Ones

The Courts were important in the shaping of a pixie’s life. Whether it be the way it affected their appearance and attributes; or it be the assigning of a pixies duties to the world, the matter of a pixies court was ingrained within them and something they remained fiercely loyal to. The many factions of the fey were as follows: Coral, Winter, Green, Seelie, Gloaming, and Unseelie. Green and Seelie fey often cooperated to the point outsiders saw them as interchangeable, though Seelie fey had a more sunny disposition, being of the Court of warmth and light. Pixies among this court aided the others by placing fresh dew on the grass in the morning, making flowers bloom in spring, or ripen crops during the summer. Similarly, Gloaming fey were often confused for Unseelie fey, these pixies belonged to the night and the dreams within it. One could expect to find these pixies influencing sweet dreams, helping one sleep, or lighting the stars in the dark night sky.
The Court of Coral oversaw the rivers and seas of the feywilds; these fey devoted their lives to their duties which might have included refreshing withered coral, aiding the tides in the journey, or swirling the seas foams around its waves. The Winter Court were often more free than the other courts, with no real leader among them, most dwelled among the world with the same goal; the spread of winter. Green fey were those more feral and connected to the fundamentals of nature, often known for leading travelers astray, watching over the forest, and shooing away those who they deemed harmful to the untouched nature they dwelled in. Unseelie fey were the outcasts of the courts, with many evil or simply opposing the perfection of their Seelie kin. These fey delighted in chaos and cruelty by plucking wings off their kin, cursing random travelers, and poisoning brews left unattended.
Pixies were known as creatures that often influenced mischief and harmless acts of deceit, their pranking each other and anyone who comes across them an expected part of their culture. However they were also known to work alongside druids, and use their magics for good and helpful deeds. They like to play pranks upon travelers who found them, as a form of greeting. Pixies were especially not likely to look kindly upon those who held connection to the Negative Energy Plane or the Shadowfell, spurning them and seeking to work against them.
Pixies were born with gifts of whimsy and laughter. It fuels them to live very much in the present, viewing the world as positive and full of never ending possibilities and friends. Pixies are driven to excel in their given role. Most Court pixies were given direction by higher-ranking fey, such as a task to guide their magic in a benevolent way rather than a dangerous chaos, like painting frost on windows in the winter mornings or setting flowers to bloom in spring.

Adventurers

Pixies are natives to the Feywilds, made by the fey long ago, and have become such an integral part of Faerie that few can imagine the plane without them. Many pixies do wander to the Material Plane, either to satiate their boredom or to fulfill a task of their Court, and a few even made their homes on the Plane of Air. Pixies often shy from civilization, with many a tale of unscrupulous wizards capturing them for pixie dust imparting a caution they rarely show otherwise. Some pixies are brave enough to join adventuring parties, filling their days with the endless excitement they seek.

Feywilds

Nearly all pixies come from the Feywilds, often as a member of one of the many Courts. Coral pixies dotted the shores of Faerie, while Winter fey are drawn to the mountains and snowy hills. Green and Seelie pixies prefer the woodlands or meadows, while Gloaming and Unseelie fey could often be found in marshes and caves or even the Feydark. Pixies who were not part of a Court could sometimes be found in eladrin cities, guarding fey crossings, or perpetually wandering the Plane.

Faerun

The eladrin kingdom of Sarifal on the Moonshae Isles drew many pixies to it to serve the Queen Ordalf. Across Toril, one could often find pixies in larger forests such as in Cormanthyr, Evermeet, and Aglarond. Many were drawn to the grassy and vast meadows of Halendos on the edge of the Yuirwood, while others made villages in forest caves or around secluded forest ponds. Some pixies had the misfortune of being captured, most often for pixie dust or their wings, though some were made to be circus attractions.

Appearance

Elven Appearance

Pixies typically looked like smaller eladrin, with pointed ears akin to elves. They often have the sharp facial features, slender builds, and graceful movements attributed to elves, though some prideful pixies will say they came first and the elves are copying them.

Bug-Like

The most notable feature of the pixies were of course their wings. Typically insect-like in appearance, such as dragonflies, butterflies, moths, even grasshoppers and bees. Their wings are not strong enough for true flight; they are limited to short amounts of height. Their fragile wings are unable to fly while wearing heavier armor; or carrying another person. They often but not always have other insect-like traits such as antennae or shining eyes.

Influence of the Courts

A pixie’s appearance was heavily influenced by their Court. A Coral pixie reflected the appearance of aquatic dwelling creatures with scales, gills, and fins. Green pixies were as vivid as the leaves they flourished in or as colorful as the autumn trees. Winter pixies were often chill to the touch and modeled after fresh snowfall and the crystal like ice they helped to create. Seelie pixies often reflected the attribute of Summer within the tones of their skin and hair; or the brightness in their eyes. Gloaming fey often had attributes that matched them to the beauty of the night sky or the wondrous imagination of dreams. Unseelie were uncanny in appearance as if their skin reflected the darkness within their hearts. Dark eyes, pale skin, unnaturally long limbs, and a fanged smile were all possibilities.

Varied Appearances

Pixies varied widely in appearance, though the one trait they all shared was their short height. They typically had warm skin tones, sometimes with unusual colors tied to their Court. Some had small antlers or horns, and others were known to have a distinct glow.

Erevan Ilesere

An exarch of Corellon, the elven deity of tricksters and mischief is also known as the Jack of the Seelie Court or the Fey Jester. He has proven fiercely protective of the sylvan races, with many fey participating in his rituals and ceremonies. Many pixies are drawn to his free spirit and mischievous nature, with many Seelie following his example.

Mielikki

The goddess of forests and forest creatures, many pixies are drawn to her worship, particularly the Green and Seelie fey, though some Gloaming pixies may also follow her. Some might pray to her to help them find their way when lost on the Material Plane, or follow her example and try to bring harmony between civilization and nature.

Silvanus

The god of wild nature is a natural deity for pixies to worship, particularly for pixies who did not care about keeping a balance with civilization and preferred the fierce and unpredictable side of nature. Some Green pixies took his title of Green Father literally, while others were drawn to his protection over all nature.
