European Union

Historically fragmented across dozens of nation-states, the establishment and government of the European Union in 2334 was closely studied and emulated during the founding of the United Federation of Nations. Highly diversified even compared to colonial worlds, the Sector possesses many financial sectors, agricultural territories, and energy reserves.  It remains a leader in several industrial and technological sectors, particularly terraforming and spacecraft design. A developed country with a very high standard of living sustained by a skilled and productive society, the Union upholds numerous social programs including social security, universal health care, and tuition free post-secondary education. The Kiel Orbital Shipyards, located in geosynchronous orbit above the historic city, was for a time the largest of its kind in the Federation and remains a high-tech shipbuilding center. The flag of the European Union was closely modeled on the former Flag of Europe. While no formal interpretation has ever been made official, the blue is generally said to represent the shared skies of humanity, truth and intellect, while the gold represents glory and enlightenment.

Structure

An alliance of powerful European nation states founded on the concepts of cooperation, collective defense and personal liberty. The Union operates through a system of supranational institutions and intergovernmental-negotiated decisions.   The European Union is a constitutional republic with a parliamentary system of government. The European Assembly is the bicameral national parliament composed of the Chancellor of the EU and the two Houses: the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Chancellor serves as head of state and is elected for a ten year term with reelection prohibited. The Chancellor is primarily a figurehead, but is entrusted with certain constitutional responsibilities with the advice of the Council of State.   The Prime Minister of the European Union serves as the head of government and is one of the most powerful institutions in government, initiating most legislation for parliamentary approval and selecting for appoint by the Chancellor, senators, federal court judges, and heads of government agencies. The leader of the party with the second most seats in the House of Representatives usually becomes the Loyal Opposition and is part of an adversarial parliamentary system intended to keep the government in check.

Culture

Culture varies widely in the European Union, yet respect for human dignity, liberty, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights are pivotal components of each nation’s values. Many racial and cultural divisions, however, still exist as a result of the “Nations Within Nations” program which administered the millions of refugeesfleeing the aftermath of the Great War. Many minority groups take the chance to shape new societies in the European Union.

History

The whole of Europe was economically and politically devastated in the wake of the Great War. To restore order to the region, much of it had been placed under the administration of local army commanders rather than any civil authority. By the late 2330s the European Union had stabilized politically and economically.

Military

The European Armed Forces is the unified armed force of the European Union, established in 2323 as part of the Declaration of the European Union. The unified institution consists of a land, sea, and air elements referred to as Mobile Command, Maritime Command, and Air Command.

Trade & Transport

The European Union maintains a capitalistic economy. It is dominated by major corporations which have a close relationship with the relevant ministries in a characteristic example of a ‘military-industrial complex’ although this practice extends to many civilian industries as well, including the banking and finance sectors. Military production of exceptional quality does, however, dominate the Union’s list of corporations and the term ‘guns and butter’ is often used to describe the Union’s economic policy.
