People's Republic of China
Even compared to the inner colonies of the United Federation of Nations, the Pan-Asian Sector is a behemoth of industry. It is the most populous of all the terrestrial Sectors, with its enormous manufacturing centers benefiting from its immense reserves of natural resources. Competition with off-world colonies has led the Sector to invest in agriculture, spearheading developments in advanced food processing and transgenic crops. A cultural superpower as well, the Pan-Asian Sector is home to a wide variety of Federation Heritage Sites and other tourist destinations. The flag of the Pan-Asian Sector was adopted in 2354 and closely modeled on the former People’s Federation of China. The red background symbolizes the fires of the Great War, while the yellow and white bands symbolize earth and metal respectively, echoing the ancient Chinese Theory of the Five Elements.
Structure
The Republic of China is a democratic presidential republic. Eligible voters elect members to the nation’s bicameral legislature a president whose administration consists of a single six-year term. There are several political parties in the Republic of China, with the Kuomintang as the dominant party and the Social Democrats and Liberal Democrats as the two largest minority parties. An organized system of disenfranchisement, division of opposition support and ballot stuffing has ensured the Kuomintang retain an overwhelming majority in both the National Assembly and Legislative Yuan for the entirety of the Republic's history. The President of the Republic of China is effectively an unchallenged dictator, and the legislature merely makes his edicts official.
Culture
China is one of the oldest continuous human civilizations, and has a rich history and traditions which inform its culture. Chinese culture has long placed importance on its own, deep history, coupled with an inwardly-focused view of the world. For much of history, China has considered itself the center of the universe, a worldview shattered by European dominance in the late 19th century and culminating in the Great War. The modern Republic of China derives much of its legitimacy from the concept of the Mandate of Heaven, the ancient Chinese concept that the right to rule is passed from dynasty to dynasty based on their ability to govern well and fairly. The KMT leadership asserts that the Republic of China has inherited the Mandate by virtue of defending it from the greatest threat to ever face China - human folly.
Territories
The Chinese landscape and climate is incredibly diverse, from sub-tropical forests in the south, to the frozen mountains of the Tian Shan and the Himalayas, and from windswept deserts and steppes to the fertile farmland of central China. China borders 14 nations. The PRC has a 14,500-kilometer long coastline bounded by the South China Sea and the East China Sea (parts of the Pacific Ocean).
Military
The Chinese military - the People's Liberation Army, or PLA - prides itself on its heavy firepower. A Chinese offensive tends to take on the nature of a slow-moving juggernaut, with the PLA employing heavy weaponry and sheer numbers to overwhelm their foes. The Chinese heavily employ propaganda on the battlefield to inspire their soldiers, and China's numerous troops have defended the homeland with a nationalistic zeal not seen anywhere else.
The Armed Forces of the People's Republic of China encompass the People's Liberation Army, Navy (including the Marine Corps), and Air Force.
Religion
Syncretism is a common trait of Chinese religion, to the point that distinguishing adherence to one religious belief from the other proves difficult, if not impossible. Chinese culture adopts many elements of foreign faiths, while more committed followers form their own religious enclaves. Historically, China's totemist religious beliefs were heavily influenced by foreign religious beliefs, such as Hinduism and Buddhism, and by homegrown philosophies such as Confucianism and Taoism. This has created a religious mix that, for the sake of convenience, is referred to as Chinese folk religion.
