Federation Security Force
The Federation Security Force, also called the Federation Police, was the federal law enforcement service in charge of maintaining order and peace in the United Federation of Nations. It was responsible for conducting regular patrols of Federation planets, investigating serious crimes such as murder and kidnapping, preventing attacks on citizens, and making arrests based on warrants or when a crime was in progress. It was composed of both sentient police officers and mechanical droid forces programmed for police functions. Officers could progress and hold supervisory ranks such as lieutenant, captain, and prefect. They could also work as detectives who were often referred to as inspectors.
The Federation Police was responsible for conducting patrols of Federation planets, enforcing the law, protecting citizens, conducting criminal investigations and providing general security. The Federation Security Force was staffed by sentient police officers who wore a blue uniform displaying their rank and their respective planet police symbol on their left arms. They were armed with a blaster pistol and also carried a baton and stuncuffs.
Structure
Enforcement: Uniformed officers who patrol, dispense discipline for minor infractions, resolve disputes, and respond to emergencies.
Investigation: Detectives who gather evidence, solve crimes, and bring their perpetrators to justice.
Customs: Officers who screen the passengers and cargo that pass through a star system's ports, confiscate contraband, and arrest smugglers.
Network: Technicians who deal with "cybercrimes", such as identity theft, copyright theft, hacking, viral attacks, and illegal AI. This divisions is also called the FSF E-Crimes division.
Special Response: Officers who deal with hostage situations, bombs, and heavily armed criminals. In the event of an emergency attack, they are the front line of interior defense, armed with military-grade weaponry.
Patrol: The ships crewed by the Patrol division serve "coast guard" functions, such as search and rescue, piracy suppression, and interdiction of illegally transported materials.
Assets
The Federation police uniform mostly consisted of shades of navy blue, gray and yellow. Higher ranking officers such as lieutenants wore navy blue tunics and pants, black boots, and a yellow utility belt with a silver buckle and a shoulder strap that attached to the belt. Stripes on the sleeves indicated rank and a yellow band worn on the left arm displayed the police symbol.
Federation police officers were armed with blaster pistols as well as batons as melee and self-defense weapons, and stuncuffs, to place on persons who were under arrest. While police officers patrolled on foot, the Federation Security Force also utilized a variety of airspeeders. The most commonly used vehicle for patrol and pursuit was the Panther police interceptor which had a compartment for two officers in the front and a barricaded section in the back for prisoners. Additionally, the BARC speeder was adapted from its military origins to be used as a patrol craft, easily navigable in narrow skylanes.
The introduction of the patrol transport, a smaller, sleeker version of the military grade Federation gunship, gave the Federation Police increased capabilities in both armament and presence. The gunship had spotlights and tracking equipment, fixed laser canons and dual mounted turrets which did not cause as much collateral damage as military weapons, and a troop bay from which police officers could be transported and rapidly deployed in larger numbers.
