A background is a character's personal story, often telling of how a character got to the point they are when we find them. Many personal stories have simiilar elements, but many more zig where others zag. There many, MANY stories of characters with different backgrounds coming together, against all odds, to go on an adventurer or act as heroes, or villains, of the realm, and beyond what a character is, it ALL comes back to their backstory. On character creation, all characters choose a Background from the list of predetermined ones, or make one out of various parts via the
Custom Background, to better suit the needs of the one telling the story.
All Backgrounds come with a set of skills and proficiences, a skill talent of choice, a ribbon that triggers when one can gain
Tokens of Inspiration, a background feature, which allows a character to autocomplete some challenges or social events, a list of Social Characteristics that can help start or finish up a character's concept. Some Adventures or settings use specific Backgrounds as examples, or give hooks or Social Characteristics that can help characters intergrate themselves into the story much better.
