Rule: Tokens of Inspiration
Summary |
- Re-roll any dice you just rolled, from d4s to d100s
- Can be used on an ally to re-roll their dice, if they accept
- Can only be used once per person per dice, requiring multiple players to contribute their tokens if need be.
Inspiration is a player resource that influences all forms of play, depending more on player actions than their character's. It is highly reliant on the consistence of the Game Master and what is considered rewardable behavior. Even then, it's a useful resource for any dice based roll in the game.
There are many forms of Inspiration, but CHASE primarily uses a system inspired by Barbarians and Colorful Horses.
What is a Token of Inspiration? |
A Token of Inspiration, Inspiration Point, or an Inspiration Token is a resource that allows you to re-roll any dice roll you've rolled, allowing you to take whichever result you prefer. This includes all dice rolls, not just d20 rolls. This affects all dice types in a single designated roll, so you wouldn't be able to re-roll an attack's d20 roll to hit and the weapon's damage with one token, but you'd be able to re-roll 2d6 if that is the weapon's damage dice, or the d20 used to make the attack. You could also use two token to re-roll the attack and the damage dice.
Additionally, any player can grant a to re-roll dice by using a Token, with a limit of one token per player per dice roll. So, using the above example, two additional but different players can use their Tokens to re-roll the same dice roll (either the attack roll or the damage roll) if the first and second rolls are not to the party's liking. Neither player can contribute more beyond that, requiring a third player (or the GM) to give their own Tokens. There is no other limit to this.
Tokens of Inspiration can be represented by anything. Stickers, Cards, small gems, etc. The tokens themselves can also last between game sessions, up to a point (there is no limit, but a GM may want to restrict them depending on their kind of game).
Inspiration and Advantage/Disadvantage
Inspiration used on Advantage rolls gives an additional 1d20 per token used. Disadvantage rolls only gain 1 extra d20 roll, no matter how many tokens are used.Gaining Tokens |
Tokens of Inspiration can be granted by the GM for good roleplay, good ideas during exploration, or interesting/creative ways of solving combat. There are also rule-based ways of earning inspiration, depending on how you build your character and what kind of game you're running. There is no maximum amount of tokens you may accrue as a player, though a GM may want to restrict it (to, say, match Attunement rules, if things get out of hand).
All players start each session with at least a number of tokens equal to the amount of players playing the game, or 4 (whichever is higher). A GM may adjust this number up or down as needed.
Rule Based Ways
You or the entire party gain inspiration automatically when you- Use your Background Feature, or fulfill the Inspiration requirement listed on the Background.
- Complete a quest or milestone.
- Stumble across a secret area while exploring. This may be Adventure dependent.
