A'mashara

"Gritesia has always prided itself on forward-thinking, and it is to the people that we owe our thanks. Without our shining citizens, we would not be here"
— Lord Yanrick of House Nightfall, moments before his assassination
A'mashara, meaning 'the light in the shade' in the elvish tongue, is the Grand Duchy of Gritesia's seat of power, and had become the shining example of Gritesia's totalitarian government. Recent events, headed by a former Mahbraha and a small group of rebels led to a change in government.

Demographics

An elven majority, with large human, gnomish and halfling populations. There are also small tiefling and goblin communities. Most of the populous sits in the lower-class, relying on each other to keep alive. The small population of others is rich, and above them are the few Lords who horde wealth and power.

Defences

The Tamuz protects the city from the South and South West, one would have to be an extrapordinary fool to attempt an attack from out of the volcanic western mountains, and very little comes from the north. The main roads westward are all watched by watchtowers and draw bridges.

Infrastructure

The mountains to the west form a large river of lava that keeps the city alight in the darkness, and the cities structures are built primarily out of stone for this reason. A series of tunnels, artificial ravines and emergency walls serves as defense should the rivers ever overflow. Sitting north of the River Tamuz, the ports and docks of the Ivy Walk are one of the only ways anything is let in or out, and the guard keeps any boat under careful watch. Moser's Bridge on the west side was once a major inlet, but now the towers do not let anyone out or in. Mead Meadow, the name for the commercial area of the city, sits above the Tamuz and is home to several taverns, shops and is the home to many of the cities less populous populations, including a Goblin Quarter.
The Smokelodge, down the centre-west of the city, is home to the rich and powerful, and named for the fine meats so often found being smoked and eaten their. In contrast, northeast of the Tower is the Forlorn Valley, which leads into the farmlands and is home to the farmers and other lower-class citizens. Between them sits three major features in the Upperward. The Tower, the Lord's Hall, and the Houses of the Lords.
And the east side, beyond the Forlorn valley and following the Tamuz as it lazily wanders eastward, farmland that feeds both the rich and poor (but oh, so often the rich), fed by nutrients that rain down from ash of the volcanic activity.

Guilds and Factions

The Guild of Adventurers keeps a small hall here, and it is said that the city is the staging point for organizations like the Encarta Family. How such a crime family could operate under the nose of the guard and the Cymus'kael is a mystery.

History

Founded on the remains of what was once an old dwarven civilization, A'mashara was once a shining example of re-growth after Heaven's Fall, that some would compare to the Free City. Their centerpiece of civilization, the Tower of Light, was built in 646 AF, as a monument to the former god Auna. And as time ticked by, they would further cement their name as the centre of the Grand Duchy of Gritesia and a place of technological progress.
This would come to a head, when the Tower of Auna was repurposed into a clocktower. Many attribute this as the beginning of the end. Corrupt and power-mongering lords began to control more and more of the city, and in recent months has even completely stopped the passage of people in and out, citing 'security threats'.
The city was a shadow of its former self. Guards patroled every street and question anyone who steps out of line. Furthermore, a secret police, known as the Cymus'kael was trying to root out any insubordination, with secret trial and brutal punishments.
In 723, rising tensions among the repressed groups formed a small rebellion. Despite the efforts of the Cymus'kael, this rebellion, led by Ve'dek, ultimatly was able to oust power from the lords, in a great explosion that demolished the Lord's Keep and led to riots in the streets. The city is still in a partial state of chaos, but steps are being taken to ensure the city moves forward democratically, with a focus on aiding those most in need.
