Session 15: Volcanic Corruption

General Summary

In the wake of the collapse, our heroes make their way out of the Smokehouse, and lead by Loanedth , head through A'mashara towards the poorer quarter of the city, in search of refuge. With Gul'Khaan supporting the newly amputated William, and a shocked Nil-enor in tow, the party manages to stay in the shadows of the city and avoid contact with the guard, or worse, the Cymus'kael.
Unfortunately, the path becomes blocked by an enormous horde of rats. Loanedth uses their Myconid skills to make contact, and offers a selection of rations to them to allow safe passage. The rats are unsatisfied, but Loanedth promises to return with a wheel of cheese to sate the rats' taste, and this appeases the hoard, which allows the party to pass.
Once the arrive in the forlorn alley, William directs the party to the inn of an old friend. The Broken Scabbard, owned by Thane. The party step inside, and find no sign Thane, just a tiefling woman tending bar and a few forlorn mid-day drinkers. The tiefling warns the party not to cause trouble, but directs them to Thane's home next door. William, Loanedth and Gul'khaan head over, while Nil-enor stays behind for a hot meal. Upon recognizing William, Thane ushers his old flame and the others in his home, and the tiefling recounts what's been going on since the party got to the city. Thane begrudges William for once-again waltzing in without a plan, and tells the party that the wedding between U'la Grimhound and the Lord Udon is to be a major event, with all of the lords in attendance, and with city guard tripled to prevent any funny business.
Meanwhile, as Nil-enor sips on his carrot stew (really a carrot tea), two cloaked figures, who identify themselves as Cymus'kael, walk into the bar. They announce the warrant of arrest for a shirtless, battle-axe wielding tiefling man, and stress that it is the duty of any citizen with information to come forward. The bar is quiet, until one of the patrons, a goblin, announces that he saw that very tiefling not 5 minutes prior. Before he can rat out Nil-enor, the barmaid temporarily distracts the Cymus'kael with a free round, and the Cymus'kael ask what she saw. A quick thinking Nil-enor points out that the tiefling they're looking for has two arms, while the one in the bar had only one. The Cymus'kael buy it, and remind anyone with information to bring it to the attention of the city guard. They then take the goblin in for questioning.
With the immediate threat out of the way, the barmaid begins suffering an anxiety attack, fearing what will happen when the Cymus'kael discover the lie. William, through Loanedth's rapport spore network and Nil-enor's mouth, tries to calm the woman, and manages to at least calm her somewhat. Thane heads over to deal with the rest of it, leaving the party to sleep in his home. Thane calms the woman, whose name is Cheer, and he takes her to the back room to let her breathe. Nil-enor, and the rest of the party, eventually find rest
Though it is not restfull. The entire party has dark dreams and visions of what they have experienced, and what is yet to come. Loanedth dreams of Nil-enor's dead body, unmoving after the building collapse, and cannot help but picture him the same as their old friend Elregag. Nil-enor dreams of the feeling of being buried alive, desperately clawing for help. William dreams of his daughter being taken away by mysterious figures, as his limbs, and later his whole body fade away. Gul'khaan dream turns to a vision of The Hero, who informs Gul'khaan that that the dark city A'mashara has become is the exact fear that he fought against in his time on Athena. He informs Gul that he must return order and goodness to the city, no matter the cost. For the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Or the one.
