Session 24: A Haunting Melody

General Summary

Face to face with the mysterious mansion, William Grimhound, Nil-enor Ulkas, Gul'Khaan, and their newest compatriot Phaeradina take a look at their surroundings. An overgrown lawn is broken up by a small garden of blue roses, and the view inside the mansion is blocked by fine linen curtains. With nowhere left to go but inside, the party enters.
An eerie quiet is broken by our partys footsteps, into the dusty mansion. Many expensive-looking things decorate the hall, and the main room is filled with paintings of a young human couple, both dressed in fanciful regalia. At the back of the room, Nil-enor spots a piece of familiar black stone behind a glass case, and while William inspects the office, and Phaeradina and Gul explore elsewhere in the house, Nil-enor attempts to silence the room and smash the glass. However, a powerful arcane force repels both the casting of his spell, and his attack on the case. An enraged spectre emerges, and attacks the group.
The ghost is incredibly powerful, sending a scorching ball of fire that burns Phaeradina, and chills the souls of Nil-enor, William and Gul. After a fruitless second attempt to smash the glass, Phaeradina grabs as many people that she can carry, plus calling upon the aid of her ripped birds, manages to escape the mansion alive. The party regroups and licks their wounds, and Nil-enor attempts to communicate the presence of the black stone to Xandeyr. He plays ignorant in front of Guildmaster Bryta Traexa, and the group come up with a new plan. William tells the others that he found a framed oil painting of Zat in the office, and he decides to attempt to distract the ghost while the others sneak around to figure it out. William gets the ghost talking, and she demands to know why the group have come to her mansion, and why they attempt to steal the black stone, an item she describes as "her last gift".
Using an alarming power to summon an upsetting-looking ape inside the office, Phaeradina opens the office window and the group pile in and investigate the painting. They discover that it is some kind of portal, as they can pass through the image. Meanwhile, William learns that the ghost is that of the Baroness, and that her wife left her the black stone as her final gift before she passed. The baroness, named Maria, is seemingly unaware that she is dead, or of how much time has passed. William calls her attention to the drawing room piano, where Maria dances a mournful waltz with an absent partner.
Convinced that the group is not here to steal, she allows them to retrieve their friends. Perfect timing, as Nil-enor has fallen headfirst into the painting of Zat. The rest of the party follow through, and Maria returns to her dance.
They find themselves in a freezing cold night, with dark storm clouds raining sheets of snow onto the party, and see fire burning the forests. In the distance, the sounds of screams, and a deathly howl.
