Tarana Beth o Dorn

Reya Tarana Beth- Dorn

Queen to King Dorreon the Third. Mother to Prince Ruark Beth, called Ruark Redeye.   Daughter to Sir Perrik Dorn and Lady Aerivin Maraigh.   Though of noble birth, Tarana was of remarkably low station to wed a king. Her mother was a Maraigh of Malbrand, and many whispered Tarana was an enchanter that had seduced Dorreon, then merely a prince, away from his betrothed Raesa Capall. These rumors were only compounded when their first and only child, Prince Ruark, was born a ghastling.   Queen Tarana oft seems like many different people, depending on who describes her. She was called demure and respectful by some, violent and loud by others, mysterious and withdrawn elsewhere, and sometimes even boisterous and jovial. Different perspectives must be taken into account, yet it is also possible that she was a woman at court, and knew she must be all things to all men in order to retain her power.   Power she wanted, and power she needed. Her mother, herself, and now her son were subjects of fear and anger, and this only intensified when her husband the Prince fathered an illegitimate child with Gildorrea Capall, the cousin of his former betrothed. Named Bethraal after the current king, this bastard child would become beloved by both high and low, in no small part thanks to the efforts of the Prince's twin brother Carn, who would become known as Carn the Usurper.   Queen Tarana had many enemies, and even her allies were unreliable. Many wanted her son Ruark to be disinherited in favor of young Bethraal. To his favor, when Dorreon became king he respected the birthright of his first and legitimate son, yet it was clear to all who observed that his mistress and their child were his favorites. One can only guess at the tricks she pulled, the favors she granted, and the battles she fought to retain her child's legitimacy, so much so that Dorreon would ultimately die defending that legitimacy.   Queen Tarana would die during the Third Brothers Rebellion. Prince Ruark, then a battle commander at only fourteen, had hidden her in a small holdfast somewhere in the Cape of Monsters. Someone betrayed this secret, however, and an army of five-hundred soldiers came to seize and execute her for witchcraft. Popular history claims they burned the holdfast down with the Queen inside, but it is of course very rare for a stone fort to submit to fire. Whatever the true means, the outcome is the same, Queen Tarana was slain by what amounted to an armored mob. Less than a moon later, her husband the King would die in the Twins Mock, and Carn the Usurper would begin his reign.
