Ruark was a ghastling, as well as the son of the unpopular Queen Tarana, who was ever overshadowed by the King's lover, Princess Gildorrea. To this day, people wonder if Ruark Redeye was born evil, or if the expectations of those around him created the monster he became.
Ruark Redeye is thought to have murdered his cousin Carnor during the Third Brothers Rebellion, fearing that his uncle Carn the Usurper meant to seize power. Later, when Carn did indeed take the crown, he legitimized Ruark's bastard brother, Bethraal the Beloved, though Ruark remained the declared heir to the throne.
Few now recall that Ruark and Bethraal actually fought together against Carn the Usurper, who sought to disinherit them once his third son was born (the first two, from his first wife, being long deceased).
