Harrek Bastion - 2nd Known Ruler of Revellia

Called the Thief

King Harrek Bastion

Reign: 649 RA - 672 RA
Wizards: Ashlyn the Tall
The second known king of Revellia. Harrek was the Chief Justicar to King Tranton of Gall. When Tranton vanished in the Fiirwood, Harrek crowned himself king and arrested Tranton's five wives. Harrek would later claim the wives as his own.   We do not know what conflicts, if any, existed during the reign of King Tranton. Yet after taking the crown, it is said that Harrek "put down the divers squabbles in the land." He is also credited with "recovering the king's magic sword, Sufferance," as well as "rescuing Saolmoth from the icy floods" and "driving the Rathites back into the north." All this was supposedly achieved in his first year of kingship.   King Tranton was best known for his adventures in search of his five queens. He left the throne for months or even years at a time, leaving the governance of Revellia in the hands of Ashlyn the Tall and Harrek Bastion. Many have therefore wondered what Harrek was waiting for, and why the old king had to die before the great achievements of his first year could be done.   Agathe the Younger would famously postulate that the myths surrounding these two kings were invented, not to shame Harrek, but to excuse his actions. Tranton was created, she says, to justify Harrek's five wives. Taking multiple wives was conventional in older Revellia, but five was unheard of. Moreover, she suggests that some members of Clan Bastion descended from the female line may have remained in Revellia for some time during the Rule of Ainros, and that the myth of Harrek taking these five wives at once would mean that no queen's descendants would be seen as superior to any other. Agathe further said that any woes apparent in the land, such as the rare flooding of the River Nightfall or raiding from the Rathlands, could be blamed on Tranton's light-fingered reign, their solutions then affixed to this new, more sensible king.   If she is correct, of course, it would seem these political maneuvers were largely ineffective. King Harrek and his heirs are not remembered fondly, and though no great crises or conflicts are recorded during Harrek's reign, it is Tranton of Gall that the peasants admire.   Harrek, if anything, is the subject of mockery and many a ribald spell. With his five queens, he fathered countless daughters and too many sons. Harreks' Horde, as they were called, were said to number anywhere from ten to a hundred, with most spellers settling somewhere around two dozen. Little and less is mentioned of his daughters (lending some legitimacy to Agathe the Younger's theories), but his sons and their ambitions would erupt into the Bastion Wars immediately following his death.   Though proper rules of succession were not yet established in Harrek's time, he had named his firstborn son Corris as his heir. History does not recall which queen was Corris' mother. Indeed the very names of the five queens are oft debated and largely unsettled. What is agreed upon, however, is that Corris was met with open rebellion the moment he donned his father's crown.
