Agathe the Younger

Wizard Agathe Yulmer

Wizard under Garland III Ainros, Prince Allad Ainros, and Gwydion Ainros   Agathe Yulmer was the daughter of Urudunite immigrants from Treri Can. Her father Arghed had been a miner until his back failed him, then a tavern keeper, but found his Khabarese heritage made finding work difficult. Agathe's family moved to Cantef when she was seven, and by fortune her mother Marvaret impressed Lord Ferrin Ollimad by flushing a foul potion from his lady wife, fed to her by a jealous enemy. In gratitude, Lord Ferrin saw that Agathe was placed in service at the spellery there.   Young Agathe excelled at spelling and had a particular mind for astronomy, but more than any of her peers she had a passion for charms and the legendary magics of the Aernigh. It was this fascination that caused her name to spread in whispers both bemused and frightened, and which eventually drew her to the attention of Agathe Eiren (later known as Agathe the Elder), wizard to King Garland III.   A year after joining the royal court, Agathe Yulmer was asked to send word to Ethelbrand seeking the hand of Princess Ellinor for King Garland. His wife, Queen Leyla, had died in a failed childbirth, and the king and wizard wasted no time finding a replacement. Wizard Rosheen claims Agathe submitted gleefully to this task, eager to be a part of history, while the speller Giriell says she objected until the King himself compelled her to do so. Either way, Agathe the Younger shares some of the credit and blame for Garland the Grim's second wife, and therefore the birth of Gwydion the Great.   Though gifted in spelling, Young Agathe found she was rarely called upon otherwise, leaving her ample time to spend researching Orrish magics. She was surprised then, when Agathe the Elder was suddenly carried off by Devil's Dance in 843 RA, and the reclusive and oft-neglected woman of five-and-twenty was called upon to serve as wizard to the embattled King Garland during the final months of the Second Brothers Rebellion. Whatever her gifts, Agathe Yulmer was unable to save the king when he contracted Springlight Fever, thus bringing about the peace that would see Prince Allad made the High Magus of Revellia and protector to young Prince Gwydion.   Agathe continued as wizard under the rule of Prince Allad, though the High Magus proved remarkably reluctant to call upon her at all. He used spellers for his correspondence, and indeed it was oft whispered the Prince himself was a speller, though if so he took pains to hide it. This meant that Agathe had over ten years to spend on her own interests, and she took full advantage of this.   When Gwydion finally came of age and was crowned King Gwydion, it was a matter of months before Agathe was called upon to present something of her skills to the king and prince. She presented them with a charmed sword called Sunrise. Charmed swords were relics of ancient times, when the Aernigh or early men engraved magics into their weapons to give them special powers. Agathe claimed to have rediscovered the secrets of their creation, and presented a sword with the charm "Out of the Shadows" glyphed upon it. The king was well pleased, but Prince Allad was furious. Unbeknownst to the reclusive Agathe, the realm was facing down a harsh Winter after a dry and hungry Summer, and the prince had expected her to offer a solution to their food shortage. To this, she could offer nothing. Gwydion was the king, yet Allad was still respected, so when he ordered Agathe imprisoned for her failures, no one objected.   Agathe would live in the upper dungeons of Castle Aerwoth for nine more years before dying of a chill. Whether Sunrise was a new sword she had crafted or (as many alleged) an older blade she had dressed up to look new, or indeed whether it was truly charmed at all, became matters for spellers to natter over.
