Etheli

Etheli are generally seen to be taller and more slender amidst the Southerners, with fairly ghast faces and light eyes.   In the New Age, Eysch influence has ballooned in the region. Many Etheli now have yellow hair, ghast-pink skin, and blue eyes. This is a fairly recent transformation, but it is already becoming unclear whether or not the ancient Ethels were also yellow-haired. Regardless, light hair is a point of pride among most people of Ethel, as it distinguishes them from the Rathi, who live primarily in the Rathlands in the southwest of the canton.   The Ethels are one of the "Thirteen Invaders," peoples who took over parts of Milos through conquest. Many of the Invaders are known for battling one of the clans of the Aernigh, but the Ethels came either before or (more likely) after the Aercuadh, and their sights were set on the Rathi, who once controlled all of what is now Ethel. Bards from both peoples say the Ethel were "masters of waves and rains, but the Northern Magics of the Ethels could not be withstood," one of many references to ancient Spelling and the supposedly superior power it once held. Many assume, though there is no clear evidence, that the Ethels originally came from across the sea, since the land they claimed is so far south of the Pass of Peril, and this would handily explain the immense sea-power now enjoyed by the canton that bears their name.   Most legends say the Ethels held the Rathi as slaves until Cenedras the Redeemer conquered the Peninsula and outlawed the practice. Centuries later, intermarriage between the two peoples is still very limited, and the Ethels are still seen as the stronger, wiser, and more beautiful of the two.
