Ghastly Tower

A relic of the Lost Age, the Ghastly Tower is a ruined fortress found where the borders of Bastis, Urudun, and the Yfri Fields meet. It is widely believed the fortress was built by one of the cantons with the aim of invading the others. It shows much evidence of collapse and rebuilding, and the spellers of Cantef largely agree it must have been subjected to several attacks from the neighboring cantons before likely being abandoned.   The main tower is five stories high, lacking a roof. What appear to be a ruined barracks and granary stand nearby. Only the fortress' gatehouse still holds a roof, somewhat ironically, as any gate that might have once stood has been removed, and there is no evidence that a proper wall was even begun.   The Ghastly Tower is said to be haunted by the ghosts of the workers who were slaughtered by enemy cantons during its construction. All three cantons have had their borders change frequently during the New Royal Age, but this relatively isolated area is the exception, so there really is no telling whose fortress this was. The Ghastly Tower comes before the introduction of Khabarese culture in Urudun, and it is far enough from Withested in Yfri to explain the lack of Monosi influence in its structures. Some have even suggested this was an Ethel fortress, as their northwestern border is not all that far away, but the uniqueness of Ethel culture comes chiefly from Eysch influence, an even more recent phenomenon.   Pilgrims have claimed to hear otherworldly wailing from the top of the Tower, even on calm nights. One man, a merchant from Arjhed, even claimed to see ghostly lights whirling about in the upper windows, though he proudly admitted he was not fool enough to investigate. The most famous visitor in recent history, however, is Sir Cadogar Garren, a landless Sutri noble who tried to seize the Ghastly Tower for himself. His band of a few dozen followers occupied the tower for nearly a year unopposed, until one of his squires returned to Grinding in the middle of Winter, bringing with him Sir Cadogar's head. When asked what had happened, the boy said only, "It were the ghosts. They said Lord Cadogar insulted them." No more is known of who or what these ghosts were, and the fate of Sir Cadogar's other men is a mystery. Most suspect they melted into the nearby RuWood to become bandits.
