Anjiil Shadowmaster Character in Ardre | World Anvil

Anjiil Shadowmaster

Wizard Anjiil

Also called Anjiil Backstabber and Anjiil Ancient. Despite being the last and therefore most recent Royal Wizard before the arrival of Ermengarda of Felissar under Carn the Usurper, virtually nothing is known about Anjiil Shadowmaster. By her own choice, Anjiil bore the same title as Wizard Jaell before her, and showed up shortly after Jaell's death to replace her. Like Jaell, she demanded her own holdfast in payment for her service, and like Jaell she was refused but still allowed herself to be talked into serving.   Anjiil's service began in 912 RA, though little enough is said of her before the Witches' War, where she served Prince Sammis at the Siege of Malbrand for several turns before suddenly vanishing in the Autumn of 917 RA. In the Spring of 918, Aerwoth was under siege. It is widely suspected that Anjiil defected to Clan Beth at this point and convinced Lord Barthos Beth to rally the Elkwoods, Oishlogs, and Farres to rise up for the second time against King Gwynt the Ghastly. Little is said of Anjiil during this siege or the dealings that led to the Second Compact. Presumably, she wisely made herself scarce, in order to evade the notice of the king she had betrayed.   Once peace was made between the Eastern lords and the king, however, Anjiil would march toward the act for which she is best known: the Final Battle of Great Cross. Here she and the Witch Queen, Aedein Ainros, supposedly matched magics against one another. None who survived the battle brought back a clear report of it, and the stories of what happened there grow wilder with each telling. What is known is that Queen Aedein was defeated, eviscerated, and burned whilst still living, supposedly at Anjiil's direction.   After the Witches' War, King Gwynt began his slaughter of wizards and spellers. Many fled into Urudun and Ethel, though many more died, yet Anjiil Shadowmaster lived safely within a holdfast granted to her by Lord Barthos Beth, near where the Boarswood meets the Fiirwood, far from civilized eyes. It is believed she lived out her days and died of her years at that holdfast.   Was Anjiil the daughter of Jaell? An old student? A younger rival who sought to steal her glory? We may never know. All we can say is that the Last Wizard played a crucial role in transferring the crown from Clan Ainros to Clan Beth, and therefore the fall of monarchy in Revellia and indeed the entire Peninsula.
