Army of Vell
The Army of Vell originally consisted of all the able bodied elves of The Vell. As the City of Vell and its power grew the army became a professional organization. It was commanded by the Grand Marshall of Vell. It consisted of 27 standing legions who rotated about the Vellish Empire where they maintained order, protected the border, and fought the wars of expansion.
The Army was often supplemented by Auxiliary Legions. These were typically drawn from the local population of the provinces and those peoples who lived outside the Empire but were willing to serve it for good Imperial Silver. These units tended to stay in place and be attached (and numbered based on) the Legion assigned to the province. They als frequently utilized trives and countries that bordered the Empire as Allies, and these ad hoc units were called Allied Legions. These units had no relation to any legion and were not organized in the same manner as the Vellish units, but the name legion was attached so that the Vell could maintain continuity in their nomenclature. They were usually named after the peoples or the leader of those peoples. The army experienced great success for most of the life of the Empire. This success was based around the discipline of the units and their commanders. It was also supplemented by the ability of Vell to replace these units if one of the rare defeats did occur. The break point came in the prolonged The Great Orc Wars][Allied Legions. The Vell had made great progress for most of the wars, and had reached a point where they felt confident of victory. The war had pushed so far North that the Armies Commander and the Council of Marshals(organization:1003e598-6ac0-4218-9e59-e6be86c143d4) decided to move their Headquarters from the @[Temple of Martius to the City of Dresen. Shortly after the move the Vell began experiencing a long string of reversals. Small at first then growing ever larger. This culminated in the disaster of the fall of Dresen.
At that defeat the war with the Orcs became the larger Wars of Chaos. The fortunes of Vell reversed shortly at that beginning when the Free Legion of the South arose. First this unit restored order in the South, then was granted rights as a regular Legion. Led by General Rolen they moved North, and were able to retake Dresen. The Orc invasion was turned back. However, Rolen was removed from command, and the Orcs were joined by the Giants and other Goblinoids.
After that the war went poorly and when the siege of Vell was ended the Army was disbanded and its few remaining veterans sent off to fare for themselves.
