The Shifting Dunes

A stretch of savanna where the earth moves unpredictably, swallowing travelers whole. Some believe an ancient being slumbers beneath the sands.

The Shifting Dunes remain one of the greatest mysteries and dangers of the Wildlands. Many believe something ancient stirs beneath the surface, shaping the land in ways beyond mortal comprehension. Could it be an old god, a lost civilization, or something even more alien?

Geography

The Shifting Dunes stretch across the western savanna and extend towards the central region of the Wildlands, where they border grasslands and arid wastelands. The terrain is in constant motion, with dunes rising and collapsing unpredictably.

  • Unstable Sand Formations: The ground beneath the dunes seems to shift without reason, making mapping the region nearly impossible. Stone spires and half-buried ruins occasionally emerge, only to be swallowed again by the sands.
  • The Sinking Valleys: These hidden pits act like natural traps, suddenly opening beneath a traveler’s feet. Some believe they lead to an underground labyrinth—possibly a tomb, a lost city, or something far older.
  • Mirage Lakes: Illusory pools of water that always seem just a little further away. Some are truly illusions, but others are real oases that move unpredictably, appearing and disappearing at different times of the year.

Ecosystem

Despite its deadly reputation, the Shifting Dunes are home to a surprising variety of life—many of which are just as elusive as the land itself.

  • Flora:
  • Ghostgrass: A pale, wind-sensitive plant that grows in patches and is rumored to glow faintly during the new moon. Some believe it marks safer paths through the dunes, while others say it grows only where people have disappeared.
  • Sandsage Trees: Hardy, gnarled trees that take centuries to grow but can survive being buried for years. Their roots dig deep, tapping into hidden water sources.
  • Blooming Cacti: Certain species of cacti bloom only after heavy winds, their flowers attracting rare creatures from across the desert.
  • Fauna:
  • Dune Stalkers: Large, burrowing lizards with chameleon-like camouflage, blending seamlessly with the sands. They ambush prey from beneath.
  • Wind Serpents: Long, ribbon-like creatures that ride the hot air currents, appearing almost like mirages. Some are venomous, while others are believed to whisper secrets to those who listen closely.
  • Sandstriders: Large, insect-like creatures with elongated legs that allow them to walk over unstable sands without sinking. Some nomadic tribes have tamed them for travel, but they are notoriously difficult to control.

Ecosystem Cycles

The Shifting Dunes are notoriously unpredictable, following no clear seasonal cycle. However, certain phenomena occur regularly enough to be noted by those who study the land.

  • The Dune Tides: Once every few years, the entire landscape reshapes itself over the course of a single night, as if the desert itself has inhaled and exhaled.
  • The Howling Winds: At certain times of the year, the winds form eerie, unearthly sounds, resembling voices or distant chanting. Some believe this is the voice of a sleeping god, while others think it is the remnants of a lost civilization, calling out from beneath the sands.
  • The Eye of the Storm: A massive, circular storm of dust and wind that appears in the heart of the Dunes every few decades. Those who enter never return, leading to speculation that it is a gateway to another realm.

Natural Resources

The Shifting Dunes are dangerous, but they hold rare treasures for those willing to risk the journey.

  • Blackglass Obsidian: Found deep within the dunes, this rare stone is said to hold trapped lightning, making it a prized material for enchanted weaponry.
  • Desert Tears: A shimmering, pearl-like mineral that can be found in old, dried-up oasis beds. Some believe these are tears of the desert spirit, and that they grant visions when held during meditation.
  • Ancient Relics: Buried ruins sometimes briefly emerge before being reclaimed by the sands. These structures may hold artifacts from a forgotten empire, but few have lived long enough to uncover the truth.
