Frostspire Mountains

The Frostspire Mountains are a vast, jagged range of snow-covered peaks and glacial cliffs rising like frozen fangs from the heart of the Icy Wastes. Named for their iconic, needle-like summits that pierce the sky like spires of ice and stone, the Frostspires are a treacherous and mysterious region, veiled in blizzards and steeped in ancient magic. Few venture into their reaches willingly, and fewer still return.

The Frostspire Mountains are a deadly and awe-inspiring range of glacial peaks, ancient fortresses, and myth-cloaked secrets. Dangerous and beautiful, they are a place of legend—where the wind whispers of the past, and death waits in every drift of snow. Only the bold, the desperate, or the damned seek the truths buried in Frostspire’s frozen heart.

Geography

  • The range is dominated by sheer cliffs, deep glacial ravines, and ice-choked passes, many of which are prone to avalanches, sudden crevasse collapses, and freezing storms that can blind and bury travelers in minutes.
  • Temperatures remain well below freezing year-round, and the air thins dangerously at higher elevations.
  • Massive glaciers crawl slowly through the lower valleys, concealing ancient ruins and creatures long thought extinct.
  • Blue-ice cliffs shimmer under moonlight, and rare veins of crystalized froststone are said to hum with residual arcane energy.

Notable Locations:

  • Frostspire Caverns:
A sprawling network of subterranean tunnels, ice caves, and glacial hollows riddling the base and heart of the mountains. These caverns are believed to stretch for miles beneath the range, home to deadly beasts, forgotten relics, and potentially ancient forges powered by elemental cold. Sections are rumored to be warm and habitable due to buried volcanic vents, making them ideal for hidden settlements or ancient laboratories.
  • Frostspire Hold:
A fortress carved into the spine of the mountains, Frostspire Hold is built into a natural stone overhang surrounded by ice cliffs. Once a bulwark against invading frost giants and northern orc tribes, it now serves as a stronghold for hardened survivors, mystics, or reclusive warriors. The Hold is infamous as the site of Dunmar Frostheart’s final stand against the dragon Vrakorath the Infernal.
It is said that deep beneath the Hold lies a sealed vault containing a relic of immense cold-based power or a remnant of the Elderforge.
  • Ridge-Spires of An'Khul:
A line of towering spires along the eastern ridgeline, so steep and sharp they resemble the teeth of a frozen god. The An'Khul spires are named after a lost frost giant warlord said to have fallen here in an ancient war. Blasted by icy winds and wracked by spiritual disturbances, these peaks are considered sacred—or cursed—by many. Strange auroras and whispering winds surround the area, and the bones of skyships and beasts are littered along the ridges.

Fauna & Flora

Flora and Fauna:

  • Vegetation is scarce, limited to lichen, glow-fungi, and frostbloom that grows in sheltered crevices.
  • Native creatures include frost wyverns, snow manticores, ice elementals, and ancient white dragons that have made the peaks their lairs.
  • Iceshard Orcs, Frost Dwarves, and reclusive monks are known to inhabit parts of the range, often guarding their territory with fierce resolve.

History

The Frostspire Mountains are steeped in myth.

  • Some claim the range was formed when a primordial ice god was slain, and the spires are his shattered crown.
  • Others speak of sealed prisons beneath the ice, containing forgotten undead warlords, demon-bound artifacts, or echoes of titanic battles frozen in time.
  • The mountains are also known to house portals to other planes, particularly realms of elemental ice, shadow, or undeath.
