Castle Emberfrost

Castle Emberfrost is a towering black-stone fortress carved into the heart of a frozen mountain in the bleakest reaches of the Icy Wastes. Encased in eternal snow and veiled by enchanted blizzards and creeping mist, it looms like a tombstone over a land of curses and forgotten oaths. Few who venture near the castle return unchanged—if they return at all. It is a place where ice and sorcery intertwine, where time seems to falter, and even shadows whisper.

Though shrouded in curses and isolation, Castle Emberfrost’s reach extends far. The tribes of the Icy Wastesorc, minotaur, goblin, dracon, human, and Frost Dwarf—exist under its looming influence. Some serve willingly, bound by blood-pacts or belief. Others offer tribute in fear, lest the cold magic consume their hearths and kin.

The Seeress and her coven exert control through:

  • Prophetic declarations drawn from ice-crystal visions.
  • Necromantic guardians patrolling the borders—shades, bone-giants, and snow-wights.
  • Arcane storms called down upon dissenters.

While Frost Dwarf clans maintain a measure of autonomy, they cannot fully ignore the sorcerous dominion Castle Emberfrost exerts across the land.

To outsiders, Castle Emberfrost is a symbol of dread, a place from which cold omens and dark portents arise. To its loyal subjects and the witches who dwell within, it is a sanctuary of arcane power, a living shrine to ice, death, and prophecy.

Many believe it to be the last bastion of an older magic, a secret too dangerous for the wider world. Others say it is merely the beginning of something far worse.

Architecture

Castle Emberfrost is an imposing structure of volcanic black stone and ancient ice, its spires jagged like frozen fangs piercing a colorless sky. The main keep rises in twisting tiers like a spine, each level etched with glowing frost-runes that pulse faintly in the dark. The outer walls are reinforced with enchanted glacial crystal, making them nearly impervious to siege, while the inner halls shift in dimension and direction, guided by arcane forces.

  • The Evermist Courtyard: A snow-laden open space that constantly swirls with spectral fog, where spirits of the long-dead sometimes appear.
  • The Spiral of Silence: A massive stairwell descending deep into the mountain’s roots, rumored to contain crypts and forbidden libraries.
  • The Mirror Halls: Cold, reflective corridors where past, present, and future blur, used by Seeresses for vision-quests and scrying rites.
  • The Weeping Spire: A crooked tower that drips with unmelting frost. It is said to be where the coven communes with ancient forces imprisoned in the ice.

History

The current ruler is Seeress Emberfrost, a powerful witch-matriarch, both feared and revered, who commands the fortress with icy resolve and prophetic insight. Her magic is potent, tied to the forces of necromancy, storm-frost, and the hidden wills of the dead. She is preparing her daughter, Amelia Emberfrost, as her heir and successor, shaping her through ancient rites and rigorous isolation.

Whispers abound regarding Amelia's mysterious parentage—some speculate she is the daughter of a frost elemental, a forgotten king, or even an imprisoned god. Her mother, the Seeress, guards the truth with ferocity, and not even the most loyal witches of the court dare ask.

Legends and Superstitions

  • The castle was once a grand temple of the Sky-Father or the Moon-Mother, now desecrated and repurposed into a seat of shadow magic.
  • The Frozen Maw, not far from its gates, is believed to be a prison for ancient entities, and Castle Emberfrost stands watch over it like a sentinel—or a warden.
  • The Blizzards surrounding the castle never stop, said to be spirits of the land bound in eternal mourning.
