Spiral of Ancients

The Spiral of Ancients is a vast, glacial landmark located deep within the Icy Wastes, revered by the Dracon—a reclusive race of dragon-blooded beings. It is not a natural spiral, but a centuries-old ritual glacier, painstakingly shaped and etched by generations of frost-magic to form a massive spiraling path carved into the ice. From above, it resembles the swirling horn of an ancient dragon or a celestial vortex frozen in time.

The Spiral is considered both a sacred site and a living monument, used to honor ancestors, preserve memory, and commune with draconic spirits. The surrounding region is frigid, windswept, and cloaked in ever-falling snow—yet the Spiral never vanishes, maintained by continuous enchantments and ceremonial magic.

Purpose / Function

The Spiral of Ancients serves as:

  • A Memorial Site: Each generation of Dracon inscribes new spirals with the names and legacies of the fallen. Warriors, seers, and chieftains all have a place.
  • A Pilgrimage Destination: Young Dracon undergo trials and vision quests through the spiral to gain the blessings of their ancestors.
  • A Ritual Conduit: The Spiral amplifies frost magic, allowing powerful necro-cryomantic rites, ancestral summoning, and soul-freezing oaths.
  • A Historical Archive: Some inscriptions go back thousands of years, chronicling the rise and fall of Dracon tribes, forgotten wars, and even the first pact with the Elder Dragons.

Architecture

  • Spiral Path: A winding, gently descending trail that coils inward for over a mile, each turn of the spiral carved with symbols, names, and memories in Draconic script.
  • Frost-Etchings: These glowing inscriptions pulse faintly with pale-blue light. They contain ancestral names, deeds, and spiritual reflections. When touched, some emit sounds—chants, voices, or draconic roars from ages past.
  • Heart of the Spiral: At the center lies a smooth basin of deep, still ice called the Cradle Mirror, believed to be a direct conduit to the Spirit Realm of Elder Drakes. During rituals, spirits are said to rise from this surface as frost-phantoms.
  • Ice-Torches: Frozen crystal obelisks rise at each spiral junction, igniting with magical coldfire during ceremonies or when ancestral magic is invoked.

Defenses

The Spiral is guarded by the Order of the Glacial Remnant, a group of frostbound Dracon mystics and warriors. Access is restricted, though allied frostborne tribes and honored guests may be granted pilgrimage rights under escort.

Storm cultists, liches, and necromancers have sought to corrupt or claim the Spiral, believing its connection to the afterlife can be twisted to darker purposes. So far, all who’ve tried have been buried in blue flame and glacial wrath.

History

  • The First Spiral was carved by Ishkarin the Frostblooded, a mythical Dracon said to have shed his warmth to walk with the dead.
  • During Blood Moons, it is said that the ice sings—a symphony of ancient voices echoing through time.
  • Some believe that if the Spiral were ever broken or melted, the souls bound to it would be released in a catastrophic storm of rage and memory.
