The Frozen Maw
A massive crevasse in the northern glaciers that descends into unknown depths. Some say it leads to an ancient underworld, while others believe it hides a great, slumbering beast.
The Frozen Maw is unclaimed by any kingdom or tribe, for none dare lay claim to its depths. However, it is not without guardians—the Frost Dwarves of the Icy Wastes, the Orc warbands of the tundra, and reclusive frost-worshiping cults all revere or fear the Maw, treating it as either a cursed wound upon the world or a gateway to untold power.
Legends speak of an ancient order of watchers, known as the Keepers of the Rift, who dwell in the Maw’s upper caverns. Their purpose is debated—some say they protect the world from what lies below, while others whisper that they are waiting for the right moment to unseal whatever has been buried within.
The Frozen Maw remains one of the greatest mysteries of the Wildlands. Some say it is a prison, others believe it is a doorway. Is it sealing something in—or keeping something out?
Geography
The Frozen Maw is a massive glacial crevasse, a jagged wound cutting deep into the ice-covered mountains of the northernmost Wildlands. It is so vast that even from the edge, one cannot see its bottom—only a dark abyss swallowing all light.
- Sheer Ice Cliffs: Walls of eternal ice, their surfaces smooth in some places and jagged in others, making climbing treacherous. The ice is said to contain shadows of the past—faint, ghostly figures frozen within.
- The Abyssal Descent: The Maw is deeper than any known cavern system, stretching down into unknown darkness. Occasional explorers claim to hear deep, distant breathing from below.
- Frozen Spires: Jagged ice formations rise from the depths like teeth, giving the Maw its name. Some believe these spires grow on their own, slowly sealing the abyss over millennia.
- The Rift Caverns: Hidden within the Maw’s edges are ancient ice caves, warmed slightly by geothermal vents. These caverns house strange ruins, etched with glyphs no living race can read.
Ecosystem
Despite its inhospitable nature, the Maw is not lifeless. Creatures adapted to its eternal cold lurk in the darkness, many of them known only in myths.
- Flora:
- Frostbloom Moss: A rare moss that clings to the edges of the ice caves, glowing faintly. Some believe it absorbs not just warmth, but memories, whispering secrets to those who listen.
- Black Ice Crystals: Found deep within the Maw, these strange formations do not melt, even under extreme heat. Their presence distorts reality, creating illusions or warping perception.
- Fauna:
- Void Howlers: Massive, unseen creatures that emit deep, mournful calls from the Maw’s depths. Some say they are spirits of the frozen dead, others claim they are guardians of something imprisoned below.
- Glacial Wraiths: Wisps of pale light that drift through the Maw’s tunnels. Scholars believe they are manifestations of lost souls, while locals insist they are hunters of the living.
- Deepborn Leviathans: Enormous, ancient beasts rumored to dwell in the lowest reaches of the Maw. Descriptions vary—some say they are serpentine, others claim they have multiple eyes that never blink.
Ecosystem Cycles
The Maw has no natural seasons, but it changes in ways no one can explain.
- The Maw’s Breath: Every few years, the Maw exhales—a surge of freezing wind that howls across the tundra, bringing with it whispers of unknown origin.
- The Black Thaw: Once a generation, a section of ice at the Maw’s edge melts unnaturally fast, revealing something ancient buried within—be it a fossil, an artifact, or a long-dead being that does not decay.
- The Eclipse Pulse: During total eclipses, the depths of the Maw seem to glow with an eerie blue light, and those who stand at its edge report visions of an underground world, as though the Maw is calling them below.
Natural Resources
The Maw is rich in unearthly substances, but few are brave—or foolish—enough to seek them.
- Frozen Titan Bones: Enormous remains sometimes surface from the ice. Their origin is unknown, but weapons forged from them are said to hunger for blood.
- Heart of the Abyss: A black gemstone found only at the Maw’s deepest known reaches. It is said to hum like a heartbeat, and those who carry it claim they hear voices in the dark.
- Everfrost Ore: A rare metal that remains colder than ice yet burns like fire when struck.
