The Drowned Flats
The Drowned Flats is a particularly dangerous and unpredictable region within the Howling Marsh, located at the heart of this vast wetland. It is a massive stretch of half-submerged land, where the water level constantly shifts between a shallow lake and a muddy wasteland, depending on the season, rainfall, and the fury of the Everstorm that often rages over this part of the marsh. The land is perpetually in a state of flux, with no fixed boundaries between land and water, making it one of the most treacherous regions to navigate.
The Drowned Flats is a mysterious and dangerous expanse of the Howling Marsh, defined by its ever-changing landscape, the erratic nature of the Everstorm, and the challenging conditions that make it nearly impassable for most travelers. While the region holds hidden treasures in its unusual flora and fauna, it is ultimately a place of survival and peril, where the land itself is as unpredictable as the storms that define it. Those who venture into the Drowned Flats must do so at their own risk, knowing that the region’s chaotic nature could lead to their ruin or their discovery of something truly remarkable.
Geography
The Drowned Flats are characterized by low-lying terrain that is regularly flooded or saturated with water. The shifting landscape creates a confusing, labyrinthine network of islands, bogs, and floodplains, making travel through the area nearly impossible for anyone unfamiliar with the region. The water levels here fluctuate rapidly, with pools and shallow lakes becoming exposed during dry seasons, while rainstorms and seasonal floods transform the area into a vast mire.
The landscape itself seems to be in a constant state of change, with the edges of the flats eroding and new channels of water opening up as the flow of the rivers from the mountains slows and spreads. At its heart lies the fury of the Everstorm, which intensifies the unpredictable nature of the region. Mudflats, quicksands, and hidden bogs are common, along with pools of water that can conceal dangerous depths.
Ecosystem
The Drowned Flats host a unique, ever-changing ecosystem adapted to the wetlands and intermittent flooding. It is a breeding ground for various species of amphibians, insects, and waterlogged vegetation, many of which thrive in the saturated environment. However, the area is also home to predators like bog snappers, swamp serpents, and swamp wolves, which are often drawn to the region's abundance of waterborne prey.
In addition to the more common swamp creatures, the Drowned Flats are known for their strange flora such as waterweeds and mosses that can grow in the shifting mud. Ghost lilies and mud blooms occasionally appear, their flowers adding a strange touch of beauty to the otherwise bleak landscape.
While the area has its share of natural beauty, it is also home to dangerous phenomena. Rot willows and withering bogs dot the area, often contributing to the feeling of desolation that pervades the Drowned Flats. Fog and mist from the ever-present moisture further obscure vision and create an eerie, almost haunted atmosphere.
Localized Phenomena
The most dangerous and defining feature of the Drowned Flats is the presence of the Everstorm, which frequently sweeps through the area, causing intense flooding and violent windstorms. During such events, the land can quickly become inundated, with paths and landmarks disappearing beneath surging waters and thick fog. Travelers and adventurers often lose their way in the flats, and the presence of the storm itself can cause disorientation, leaving people vulnerable to the storm’s unpredictable fury.
The tides of the Everstorm are known to transform the flats from waterlogged quagmire to flooded wasteland, with much of the area disappearing under water during the height of the storm's strength. This phenomenon is what gives the Drowned Flats its name and has earned it a reputation as one of the most dangerous areas of the Howling Marsh.
Climate
The climate of the Drowned Flats is tropical and humid, subject to the changing weather patterns of the Howling Marsh. Frequent rainstorms and the erratic behavior of the Everstorm create an environment that is constantly shifting between dampness and flooding. While the dry seasons can leave parts of the flats as a muddy wasteland, the rains and the storms quickly turn the area back into a submerged landscape.
The air is thick and often stagnant, with an oppressive humidity that makes the marsh feel suffocating during the warmer months. The violent storms that pass through the region are both the lifeblood and the terror of the Drowned Flats, shaping the land with their fury and making the region both unpredictable and unforgiving.
Fauna & Flora
The flora and fauna of the Drowned Flats have evolved to thrive in the shifting, swampy conditions of the area. Among the vegetation, water-sodden trees like Rotwillows and Sedgebrush are common, though they are often warped by the extremes of flooding and dryness. The drowned soil is rich in decaying organic matter, fostering the growth of mosses, algae, and swamp weeds that cling to the landscape.
The fauna of the Drowned Flats are similarly adapted to the difficult environment. Leech serpents and swamp drakes are frequent inhabitants, as well as migratory birds and water creatures such as bogfish and aquatic insects. Bog scavengers and swamp beasts make their home in the muck, lurking beneath the surface or hidden in the undergrowth. The ever-changing tides of the region often bring new species of insects and small mammals, adding to the dynamic nature of the region’s ecosystem.
History
Tlaumaren is the nearest settlement to the Drowned Flats, and while it lies on the coastal edge of the marsh, it does not venture deep into the flats itself. The flats are largely untamed, and few settlements are built within the region due to the harsh and unpredictable conditions. However, the port city of Tlaumaren relies heavily on the resources of the marsh, including medicinal herbs, rare materials, and unique creatures that are foraged from the dangerous flats.
Occasionally, adventurers or explorers venture into the Drowned Flats to search for rare materials like black mire sap, bogstones, and mystic herbs that are unique to the area. However, due to the ever-present danger of flooding and storms, few venture far from the safety of the surrounding region. Those that do often go in small, well-prepared groups, relying on local guides and navigation skills to avoid getting lost or caught by the storm.
