The Shifting Plains
Grasslands that change rapidly due to wildfires, rainstorms, and sudden droughts. The landscape never looks the same for long, leading many to believe it is alive.
Because of its unpredictability, few seek to settle or claim the Shifting Plains, leaving it largely in the hands of nature, nomads, and those brave enough to embrace its chaos.
Geography
The Shifting Plains are an ever-changing stretch of rolling grasslands, shaped by the chaotic forces of nature. Unlike typical plains, these lands seem to transform unpredictably due to rapid weather changes, sudden wildfires, and erratic rainfall.
- Rolling Grasses & Sudden Barren Wastes – Some areas are lush and vibrant, with tall grasses that sway like ocean waves, while others become parched and cracked within days, resembling a desert.
- Wind-Carved Formations – Over time, the relentless winds have sculpted strange rock formations, some standing tall like pillars, while others resemble twisted, spiraling spires. These formations serve as landmarks for nomadic travelers.
- Lightning-Forged Hollows – In places where storm-fires rage, the land becomes charred and hardened, forming glass-like craters or hardened, blackened soil where nothing grows for decades.
Ecosystem
The Shifting Plains are defined by extreme and unpredictable weather.
- The Everstorm’s Reach – The infamous Everstorm sometimes extends its influence here, bringing erratic lightning storms, violent gales, and sudden torrential rains.
- Fire & Renewal – Wildfires sparked by lightning or dry heat tear through the plains, but within weeks, new grasses and flora emerge, rejuvenated by the ash-enriched soil.
- Flash Floods & Hidden Streams – Some regions experience rapid flooding, transforming dry expanses into temporary marshes and lakes, which disappear as quickly as they form.
The wildlife here has adapted to the instability, with species that are nomadic, resilient, and opportunistic:
- Storm Antelopes – Agile creatures that sense the changes in the wind, migrating just ahead of storms and fires.
- Burrowbeasts – Small mammals that hide underground during harsh weather, emerging only when conditions stabilize.
- Lightning Shrikes – Birds that follow the storm, preying on creatures left vulnerable by sudden environmental shifts.
Localized Phenomena
The Shifting Plains hold many hidden dangers for the unprepared.
- Vanishing Trails – Paths that once led to oases or shelter may vanish within a single storm, leaving travelers stranded.
- Magnetic Anomalies – Some areas, particularly near the Thunder Peaks, have unstable magnetic fields, disrupting compasses and navigation.
- Phantom Fires – Some fires burn with no apparent source, flickering blue and green. Some believe they are ghostly echoes of past storms.
History
For the nomadic Stormborn tribes, the Shifting Plains are a place of trials and omens.
- The Land of Tests – Many believe the plains challenge those who seek passage, demanding endurance and adaptability.
- Wind-Speakers & Prophets – Some seers and mystics claim to hear voices in the shifting winds, interpreting them as messages from the storm spirits.
- The Ever-Changing Path – Travelers claim that the landscape itself moves, making it difficult to rely on traditional maps or paths.
