Thunderhorn

Massive, woolly bison-like creatures with curved horns that store static energy. During storms, they discharge their power in blinding bursts, shocking predators.

Basic Information

Biological Traits

Thunderhorns have evolved to harness the power of the storms, making them formidable survivors in their chaotic environment.

  • Static Charge Storage – Their curved horns accumulate and store static electricity from the stormy atmosphere or from rubbing against certain rocks and plants.
  • Lightning Discharge – When threatened, Thunderhorns release stored electricity in blinding bursts, stunning predators and deterring attacks. Some older bulls can even release a small arc of lightning between their horns.
  • Storm Resilience – Their dense fur is slightly conductive, allowing them to redirect weak electrical discharges safely across their bodies. This prevents them from being heavily injured by natural lightning strikes.
  • Thundering Charge – When provoked, Thunderhorns can stampede at high speeds, their hooves kicking up sparks as they generate massive amounts of electrical energy.

Ecology and Habitats

Thunderhorns are massive, woolly bison-like creatures that roam the Storm Plains, particularly the Shifting Plains and Thunder Peaks, where frequent storms shape their way of life. They thrive in open grasslands and rocky foothills, grazing on Stormgrass and other resilient vegetation that survives in the volatile landscape.

  • Appearance – Thunderhorns have thick, shaggy fur in stormy hues of gray, deep brown, and black, offering protection against wind and rain. Their defining feature is their large, curved horns, which are infused with naturally conductive minerals that allow them to store and discharge static electricity.
  • Diet – They are herbivores, primarily consuming Stormgrass, Thunderblooms, and hardy shrubs that flourish in storm-prone regions. Some believe their diet plays a role in their electrical abilities.
  • Social Structure – Thunderhorns move in large herds, relying on their numbers and collective energy discharges to deter predators. Each herd is led by an elder bull, whose massive horns hold the most charge and serve as a symbol of dominance.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Thunderhorns are revered and utilized by various cultures throughout the Wildlands, though hunting them is dangerous due to their lethal discharges.

  • Beasts of Burden – Some nomadic Stormborn tribes have tamed Thunderhorns, using them for transportation, plowing, and heavy labor. Their ability to store energy makes them highly valued, though they require expert handling.
  • Battle Mounts – Some warriors, particularly those from Storm Plains warbands, attempt to bond with a Thunderhorn for use in battle. A charging Thunderhorn, its horns crackling with energy, is a terrifying sight on the battlefield.
  • Ritual Significance – Many believe that Thunderhorn herds are sacred creatures tied to the storm gods. Some tribes perform ritual hunts where warriors must survive a Thunderhorn’s charge to prove their worth.
  • Resources & Trade – While hunting them is rare, fallen Thunderhorns provide highly valuable materials:
  • Thunderhorns – Used to craft shock-resistant weapons, armor, and magical foci.
  • Stormhide – Their fur is treated and woven into lightning-resistant cloaks and garments.
  • Electrified Bones – Used in ritual totems and as components in arcane storm magic.

Thunderhorns remain symbols of power, endurance, and the untamed fury of the storm, embodying the relentless energy of the Storm Plains.
