material-article material-type

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

The current Material article types available to represent geological materials are somewhat confusing and don't accurately delineate things in the way I believe they're trying to.   Currently, the options are Metal, Ore/mineral, and Stone. I believe metal is fine, but ore and stone are not really geological terms, and ores and minerals are quite different and I do not believe they should be lumped together.   Minerals have one chemical composition, meanwhile ores are rocks or sediments that contain a valuable mineral (usually a metal) that can be profitably mined. I understand that ore in this sense may be in reference to the mineral metal inside the rock or sediment, but in that case I don't see the need to lump it in with minerals, since the Metal type already exists, so I think Mineral should be a type by itself since it is geologically distinct.   I also believe Stone should be renamed Rock because rock is an actual geological term meaning a composite of multiple minerals, which that I believe was the intention for the Stone type. It would make sense to lump Ore in here with Rock, if it is not lumped in with Metal.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

My geologist friend might stop having a conniption if this is remedied. Geologists everywhere can be protected from conniptions if we act swiftly.   For the low cost of changing the phrasing of this one article type, you can prevent geologists everywhere from experiencing intense psychological distress. Will you be an angel for a helpless geologist? Every day innocent geologists are ignored, neglected, and driven into conniptions. And they are crying out for help.

The Team's Response

UPDATE This has been implemented - it will be deployed today or tomorrow.   Hey there beans!   I will not remove anything existing (or rename it but we can add:
  • Rock
  • Rock'n'Roll
  • Rock, Sedimentary,
  • Rock, Metamorphic
  • Rock, Igneous
  • Mineral
  • Note: Humour and good vibes help make features better ... and significantly faster! <3

I'm always in favour of having the right scientific terms available at least in the high level categories. I don't object to having other non-overlapping fantastical schemas if that's what people want to use (since we aren't doing science) but we should as a minimum be able to describe things in the way a modern human with some knowledge in the field would do so without giving them conniptions!

WA needs a "Standards" (translates to "tidy and organize") committee across the board on ALL the templates. I applaud the effort to help us when we get stuck on that "what is it?" question, but I'd seriously prefer blank text fields to having to choose the next best thing, especially where things like this that require a bit of refinement are required. As far as I know (Not a geologist), there are only three types of 'Rock': igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. And for those who want to break the mold (..."but it's not from Earth!") there can always be an option for "Rock, Other". I am offering an upvote of +300 cuz I have the points to spare and I wanna save geologists everywhere from the Conniption Monster. :)

Additional options: Yes. Replacing existing options: No. For some worlds, "ore" or "stone" is EXACTLY how you want it.

While I don't think "Stone" should be removed (some fantasy worlds don't have the same geology as Earth), I can see how having the three rock types listed as separate options could be pleasing.

Silly to think this would not help clearly communicating the worldbuilding concepts. Have you seen the amount of building/geography types there are in the list and how many requests there are to add 5 more?   How would separating clumped-together concepts be "pleasing semantics loving geologists" any more than adding "Map, Topographic" or "Supercontinent" pleases the few people that will use those?   (Loving the picture and the amazing humor, btw. Also TIL about the word "conniption". Beautiful word.)

It would be nice to have Ore be separate (as it does specify a form of impure, unrefined material that some worlds may make significant use of), and Rock could be usefully split into three types (such as 'Rock, Sedimentary,' 'Rock, Metamorphic,' and 'Rock, Ignious'). (Please pardon any spelling errors, it's been a while.)   The ability to have specifics would be lovely, not to mention that the different types of rock is something that folks're taught in elementary school (or are in my country, anyway).
