Permalinks to content that don't change when you update an article title, world name, or username

permalink UUID url name links button
Currently, when you change your username it changes the url of your world (if you do not have or use the Sage+ feature of custom URLs).   Even if you do use the custom URLs feature, once you publish an article and then later change the article's title - the url slug auto-updates and you need to remember to change it back manually.   URL changes can be a problem for both users and also for the WA Team - when links break due to changes it's a nightmare to try and go around remembering where you've posted something to update things to the new link.

My solution

Articles, worlds, pages, and users all use a Universally Unique Identifier (UUID) which you can see as a long string of numbers and letters when you link to an article or piece of content such as @[Corvidan](species:46ea49f5-031a-415c-830c-c3d8dc5d486b).   As this already exists, my suggestion would be to have an optional to use permalink that ends in this UUID, in fact you can already see this in action when you create a brand new article that doesn't have a title yet and try to click the view button! Example: https://www.worldanvil.com/world/settlement/e48ee84b-23c0-4ef6-9471-08045ede6481/URL_HERE (which currently links to a 404) or the edit page for that article: https://www.worldanvil.com/world/settlement/e48ee84b-23c0-4ef6-9471-08045ede6481/edit   This would not replace the current way that urls work, it would be an addition :D   With this new feature suggestion, there would be a button similar to the Copy Article Block button that would give you the option to use a permalink to a:
  • World homepage
  • Article, map, timeline, or chronicle page (etc)
  • Author page*
*For folks concerned with privacy this could be an opt-in / enableable feature.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Having the option to use permalinks would benefit everyone involved, it would take away the headaches of updating things manually if you decide to re-title your articles, update your world name, or tweak your username.   This would be useful for the WA Team, too! Permalinks would remove the need to chase up articles and users from challenges or events and will keep links on the website, blog, and social media permanently accessible (more traffic to WA, and more readers to our worldbuilding)!

What are other uses for this feature request?

Feel free to weigh in on ideas and opinions in the comments!

The Team's Response

Thank you for your suggestion. Upon inspection, this is a complex packet of features, so we've submitted this to the team for further discussion and is accepted for further investigation. Until a consensus is reached, this feature suggestion is closed.   Please watch here for upcoming updates!   Update: After discussing it with the team, we've decided that the solution proposed here has deeper implications that would negatively affect the system. However, we understand the pain point and figured out an alternative approach that would address the same issue. We've added it to the backlog for a future update.

Not something I'd personally use since I love the human-readable urls, but I can absolutely see where others would gain a lot from this!

I was just thinking about this danger while adding hundreds of links in a new world... I had wanted to rename it, but I think that is already going to be a nightmare of broken l inks...

I'm often afraid of changing my world name etc. because of this very issue. Having another permalink would be great, though I'm unsure how easy it would be to implement. Thanks for suggesting! God bless. <3

Yes, please. During Summer Camp last year, I changed my username and had to go through everything I'd already submitted and/or linked in my Pledge, and back then I didn't have that many articles. An option like this would have saved me a bunch of trouble then an would certainly do so now.

One time I tried to tackle year-old notifications I had. About a third of them had broken URLs. I also regularly receive double notifications with notes like "Sorry, I changed the title and the previous notification broke".   This would be very a very useful improvement to keep stuff usable indefinitely.

I have long wondered why using a UUID for *every* URL wasn't how WA works. Having the URL change whenever an article title (or whatever) changes causes broken URL problems over and over.

As someone who's changed their name / their world's name several times throughout the years, I imagine there are others who have done similar... and would want to make sure links to their content scattered throughout the internet don't suddenly 404 as a result!
