Profetta Torre

Profetta Torre is the centre of divination magic in Troyvalden. It is the smallest of the five Torres of Mustoir, and also the most reclusive and mysterious. Profetta's colours are light and dark shades of blue.

Location and Torre Architecture

Located on a small hill deep within the Hunting Woods of Eastern Mustoir, Profetta is rather isolated from the rest of the city. The tower itself is around 170 feet tall, a tall conic spire adorned with glittering tiles in shades of blue, it reaches high above the surrounding trees as it sparkles in the sunlight. The tower is surrounded by long, low classroom buildings interspersed with gardens and long ponds where the constant sounds of flowing water mix with the birdsong of the surrounding woodlands.

Commercial Services

The most common commercial services offered by associate mages are in Translation. Low level associates can be found in the employ of noble houses or trade conglomerates as interpreters or translaters of contracts, most commonly around Karnath and Darimouth where trade between Common-speaking humans and Dwarves or Dragonborn is commonplace. These "mages" may actually have no true magical ability at all, and simply became sufficiently fluent through more traditional means that they have no need for Comprehend Languages or Tongues - at least in commonly encountered languages.   The most practical magical service offered is the identification of magical artifacts. These are however rather rare in the Flussland, so there are only a small number of specialists in this area. It is one of the few places where the behaviour of magical materials such as Andrionite, Andron Salt and Durbaxanite. More common is the identification of any temporary charms which may have been added to an item by mages of the Feitica Torre.   The last class of services offered is in more true divining of truth and the future. Interpretation of omens, fortune telling, dream reading and outright prophesising are all available at elevated prices affordable only by affluent nobles.

Culture

Profetta has a relatively small number of students, who are typically quirky Lassan children from minor noble families, and those interested in foreign cultures. They are less interested than most of Torres in the theory of magic, believing that through studious understanding of language and linguistics they can develop an understanding of subtext and meaning within more mysterious sources. As such, students focus more on the learning of languages, especially Dwarven, Elvish, Halfling and Draconic. More exotic languages such as Orcish and Gnoll are also studied.   There is a thread of the syllabus focusing on meditation and communication with the weave, leading to almost all students having the ability to cast Detect Magic. Interspersed with the true magic is an element of predictive quackery - cloud reading, card reading and interpreting omens such as the way that water flows down a marble sheet are all taken very seriously.

Research

Those more academically focused into the Arcane often work at improving their ability to cast Clairvoyance and Scrying with greater effectiveness. Much of the research is into alternative forms of divination, most of which are very unsuccessful.

Public Agenda

Profetta are relatively disengaged from the day to day political life of the city. They prefer to take a more long term viewpoint, and it is not unusual for Yves de Grannet to interject at meetings with vague predictive statements, or simply to agree that clear facts are indeed divined to be true. As such, they are often seen as a little off the rails by the other Torres, although they have a frustrating ability to be right which gains them a begrudging respect.   They consider the events of Mathion's death to be "shrouded in mystery" - a position which sounds very suspicious to most! In fact, his death was foreseen by Serge Gamond (although not its circumstances) but Yves was not willing to scare him, so the prophecy was covered up. Their official line now is that they have "foreseen the great return of the Duchy". They are not fond of the occupying Acarian military, mostly because they run much rowdier hunting parties (although some would say they had the same complaints about Mathion's court as well).
