Archprovost of the Torres
The Archprovost is the highest postition within a wizard Torre in Mustoir. They are seen as the academic, arcane and political leaders of the Torres, a combination of roles which any individual is rarely perfectly suited for all three. It is a life position, and as such is typically held by very old men.
Appointment
Upon the death of a previous Archprovost, the existing Provosts have a week to confirm their interest in committing to the Archprovost role. As it is a life term (unlike the Provosts themselves), it is not unusual for the preferred candidate to opt out. Assuming that more than one candidate remains, they are then elected. The Fellows and Deans of the Torre get one vote each, the other Provosts ten votes and the Archprovosts of the other Torres also get ten votes.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the Archprovost are many, although some of these are often delegated to their Provosts.
Academic responsibilities
The first responsibility of any new Archprovost is to appoint their successor in their role as Provost from among the Fellows. They have pretty much complete control over who is appointed as Fellows, Deans or Provosts. They are rarely involved with the Students or Associate Mages, and although they retain the official sign off of the syllabuses and examination processes for the Torre, they rarely disagree with the Provosts of Education and Examination.Arcane responsibilities
The Archprovost is often the most powerful caster, or at least would be an extremely capable magician. If they were originally in a research role, they may continue their work in the creation of new spells and incantations; or if they held a more commercial responsibility they may continue to do work for paying clients - if only for the most exclusive and expensive rates!Political responsibilities
As the figurehead of the Torre, the Archprovost has significant political power within the city of Mustoir. Together with their fellows of the other Torres, they meet weekly to discuss arcane matters, but traditionally this meeting was always followed by a meeting with the court of the Duke of Mustoir to discuss the political issues of the day. After Mathion's death, this meeting has been replaced with one with the leadership of the occupying Acarian Military, which is often a tense affair.Grounds for Removal/Dismissal
In rare cases, Archprovosts can be voted out of office. This requires a no confidence vote conducted in the same way as the election. It requires a 90% negative response, and as such is rarely attempted never mind is successful. The most recent time this happened was when an Archprovost voluntarily stepped down due to ill health.
