Torres of Mustoir

Mustoir is the home of wizardly magic in the Flussland. The mages are organised into five distinct Torres, each with a particular specialism. Each Torre operates as both an educational establishment training young mages, and as a commercial enterprise selling their services.   Each Torre has a central tower reaching high into the sky above Mustoir, up to 1000 feet tall. The towers form a perfect pentagon, with the centre at the conflucence of the rivers Darine and Grein. Around each tower is a collection of halls, libraries and quadrangles where mages live, study and train.

The Five Torres

On the eastern bank of the Darine, just to the north east of the Palace lies the Ampara Torre, specialists in Abjuration magic. In the south eastern corner, hidden amonst the trees of the deer park aside from it's sparkling spire lies Profetta Torre, sepcialists in Divination magic. These two towers have historically been most aligned with the political classes in Mustoir.   Due north of the confluence lies Feitica Torre, the enchantment specialists. Along with the north western Mogrica Torre who specialise in Transmutation, they are the most commercially minded of the towers. Both are situated in the sprawling trade districts of Mustoir, and in fact both Torres own many of the commercial buildings and docks in their vicinity.   The final Torre is situated in the middle of the Mustoir slums, surrounded by narrow streets and wooden houses. The Detona Torre are specialists in Evocation magic, and the loud noises of the experimentation (and occasional accidental explosions) have contributed directly to the poverty of the local area, with everyone wanting to live as far away from them as possible.

Structure

The five Torres are formally independent, but they work together on many matters and relationships are pretty cordial most of the time, aside form the expected friendly rivalry. The Archprovosts of the Torres meet every week to discuss business, politics and educational matters.   Below the Archprovost, there is a heirarchy of provosts, deans and fellows with responsibilities for various aspects of the operation of the Torre. Attaining a fellowship requires dedication and political influence within the Torre, along with significant prowess in the specialism. Apprentice mages will study for 3-5 years to attain their qualifications, after which they will need to work as an Associate Mage for up to 10 years before attaining a fellowship. Each Torre would typically have around 30-40 Fellows at any one time.   Up to a dozen Fellows may choose to specialise more in education than research, and transfer to a position as a Dean. These Deans take on more direct teaching work, as well as looking after the pastoral needs of the students. Some Fellows, especially those specialising in particular research areas, will still teach.   Each Torre has 10 Provosts, who are experienced Fellows who have more leadership positions. Roles vary slightly from Torre to Torre, but will always include the Provost of Education, the Provost of Examination, the Provost of Services (responsible for the commercial arm of the Torre), the Provost of Research and the Provost of the Tomes. Other roles vary with the Torre and are domain specific experts. Perhaps predictably, the Provosts and Archprovosts are always well into their 60s and 70s, and are usually men.

Commercial ventures

Each Torre offers a variety of commercial services. Prices vary, but associate mage rates start at around 100gp per day, with fellows as much as 300-500gp per day, depending on what services are being offered.

Public Agenda

The Torres have the most influence over Mustoir of anyone except the Duke, controlling much of the commerce and with political connections within the court.   Since the occupation of Mustoir by the Acarian forces, they have found it extremely difficult to maintain their position, and are now barely guarded in their contempt for the situation, while all still maintaining their innocence in the assassination.
