A small village northwest of Unity City, in the Unified State of Unity

Demographics

Government

The village is run by a council of 9 chosen from the residents by the residents. Villagers must be of the age of 20 or older to vote.
The council position is re-elected every 3 years in groups of 3, so, every year, 3 of the council positions are up for re-election.

Defences

The village is defended by armed citizens on a day to day basis.
Long term defense is provided by the Unity State Army, and the Army of the King.

Industry & Trade

The village is a rest point along the Unity to Oakhorn road.
Services offered are blacksmithy, mercantile, an inn, and a Church of Somm. Some residents also provide services such as wood working and potions.
The village is surrounded by farm land, growing mostly wheat, corn, and root and tuber vegetables. Live stock is mostly reserved for personal consumption, or as work animals (horses, oxen, cows, mules) though one farm does sell wool from their sheared sheep in limited quantity. Pigs are also available in limit quantity.
The local creek does not produce enough trout to harvest as a trade item.

Infrastructure

All roads are packed dirt. At the edges of the village, the roads are lined with trees. Water for drinking and irrigation is provided by Haddare Creek on the eastern edge of the village
Restroom facilities are provided by outhouses, or indoor privies, consisting of pit latrines. When the pits fill, it is common practice to release a Gelatinous Cube in to the pit and cap the pit off, allowing the Cube to consume the waste. Once the waste is gone, and the Cube is nearly starved, it is retrieved, and either fed a minimal diet until needed again, or moved to another pit. Some cubes are shared from household to household.

Tourism

Meadowspell grew around the Yellow Sign Inn, a rest stop on the road from Unity to Oakhorn. This is where most visitors will be found, though the Church of Somm welcomes all worshippers. The mercantile, the smithy, and the woodworks all support the local residents, but also cater to travellers when a wagon wheel breaks or a horse throws a shoe.
The Yellow Sign Inn is also where the village council hold their meetings.

Architecture

Most of the houses and buildings are single story timber and daub construction. The inn and the church are 2 stories and constructed with planking and shakes. A few of the houses have a stone lined basement, but most, if a basement is present, are earthen root cellars.

Geography

At its highest point, Meadowspell is 1351 feet above sea level and sits in the flood plane of the Haddare Creek. 30 miles to the east of the creek are found the foothills leading in to the Great Spine Mountains; 75 miles to the west is moderately dense forest. The forest to the north begins at the edge of the village, and the south is thick with farm lands.

Natural Resources

Game

A hunter can expect to find larger animals such as deer and bear, smaller animals such as squirrel, rabbit, mink, martens, and fox.

Fowl

Fowl are plenty, with ducks and geese along the creek, grouse in the fields, and wild turkey in the woods.

Fish/Crustaceans

Haddare Creek is rich with trout, bass, fresh water snails, and crayfish.

Trees

The woods around the village supply pine (25%), larch (17%), hemlock (20%), dogwood (25%), and boxwood (13%)

Berries/Fruit

The most common berry growing around the village is the blackberry. Other common berries include blueberries, raspberries, huckleberries, and salmonberries.
Though not native, apples, cherries, and plums are found throughout the forests around Meadowspell. Wild strawberries grow in mossy forest clearings.

Soil

Consisting of sand, silt, peat, clay, and loam, the soil surrounding Meadowspell is fertile; a rich humus ground. The soil holds water well, and promotes moss growth where the ground is not heavily travelled. The compacted dirt roads have been embedded with a higher mix of clay, and during the less rainy seasons, can be as solid and durable as concrete.
