2020-11-12 - The Cleaning Crew Pt. 2 Report

General Summary

* Game sessions are now being recorded, so session reports will be more accurate and may contain details that might have been missed when recounting from memory.   ** Due to a work schedule conflict, Michael Rounsville (Grim) will not be attending the session. With his absence, we will be running a short low level side quest with the 3 remaining players. This and the previous report will include descriptions and quotes from the NPCs from the adventure, Into Ivy Manor, written by M.T. Black, and purchased from DM's Guild marketplace. No copyright infringement intended.   From a player's description of the last session:   "While his fellow companions fought some potted plants (4 twig blights) and a couch (a mimic), your friendly monk decided to go in to the bedroom and take a little rest. He then got up and fought himself. Who is himself, nobody really knows but he had an evil grin. Mean while, back at the other fight involving the other party members do not ask our butler friend (Clatter, the animated armor) to help them out, thus killing the passive butler friend when it was targeted by the plants and couch. Not immediately returning to the party, Nobody decided to wander around and 'see what's up', finding the kitchen and a little girl all tied up. What did he do? He left her tied up and crying, and went to support his friends. The friends were either very close to killing the potted plants, or the potted plants were very close to killing them; either way the battle was won. And, Kanuni was sad that his bird died. The group took a long rest in the kitchen (where the little girl was still tied up) to allow Kanuni to once again summon his bird and the group to recuperate from the previous battle with the potted plants and the couch. Kanuni was constantly interrupted and did not get a chance to 'resurrect' Chovy. Looking for something fun to do, Nobody found the library and snooped around for a bit, finally returning to the kitchen. He scooped up the bound little girl and went in to the bedroom. The other two followed."     The game begins at the end of the last session.   The three party members and the bound girl are relaxing in the bedroom momentarily when the four grinning images step out of the mirror, coalescing in front of the dresser, the sadistic smiles never leaving their faces.   Irthar is the first to spring in to action, drawing his crossbow to target the reflection of the little girl. The bolt lands true and the reflection is injured. Irthar moves up on the group of reflections.   The reflection of Irthar moves to meet him, a mace at the ready. The reflection swings the mace, missing Irthar as he dodges to the side.   Kanuni casts Burning Hand catching the reflections of Nobody, the little girl, and himself in the cone. Each of the reflections are burned, but are still in the combat. Kanuni retreats out the bedroom door after his attack, and the reflection of Irthar swings wildly with his mace, connecting with Kanuni as he turns to run.   The reflection of Kanuni attacks Irthar, and misses as Irthar's armor deflects the blow harmlessly.   Nobody targets the reflection of the little girl with his crossbow, the bolt doing a significant amount of damage to the image. Nobody ducks out the door of the bedroom to the hallway, leaving Irthar and the little girl in the room.   The image of Nobody turns his attention on Irthar but manages to miss him with a telegraphed swing of a mace, giving Irthar time to dodge the attack.   The image of the little girl goes after the still bound and helpless real little girl; the mace critically hurting the defenseless girl. The little girl is knocked from her chair by the blow, and she falls to the floor. The blow crushed her skull and now she lies dead and bleeding.   In the bedroom, Irthar is hoping that the reflections aren't so bright, and tries to take cover in a shadow in the room. His reflection follows Kanuni out of the room and and again manages to hit Kanuni with his mace. The strike is solid and Kanuni is now reeling from the blow. As Kanuni is stumbling away, the reflection takes another shot at Kanuni, grazing him. Kanuni uses Vicious Mockery on the reflection, to no effect.   The image of Kanuni comes out of the bedroom, and since the fight between the real Kanuni and the image of Irthar are down the hall and round the corner, he stands unsure where to go. A crossbow bolt whizzes out of the shadows, fired by Nobody. The bolt finds it's target in the image of Kanuni, the creature suffering moderate injuries. Nobody's reflection returns the crossbow fire, missing Nobody, due to the monk's fancy footwork. The reflection of the little girl now enters the hallway, and fires her crossbow down the hall at Nobody, also missing.   Through the open doorway of the bedroom, Irthar can see the reflection of Kanuni. He lines up his crossbow and fires, the bolt landing true; the creature is critically wounded. Irthar slips around the reflections in the doorway as he exits the room to join the fight in the hallway. The reflection of Irthar takes a swipe at Irthar as he passes, but misses.   In desperation, Kanuni grabs one of the potion vials from his pouches and downs the contents. He feels a surge of restorative energy flush through his body, and the wounds that were once losing blood have began to clot.   The reflection of Irthar is now focused on the real Irthar, having just been passed by the rogue. The reflection takes another swing with it's mace and hits Irthar squarely in the shoulder. The injury is enough to give Irthar a serious deep bruise, but no bones were broken.   Nobody again targets the reflection of Kanuni, but this time the bolt misses.   The reflection of Irthar is now joined by the reflections of the little girl and Nobody. Both images takes a swing at Irthar but is unable to connect with either blow.   Ignoring the reflections attacking him, and coming to Kanuni's rescure, Irthar draws his rapier and stabs at the reflection of Kanuni, which blinks out of existence like a lens flare. With the dagger in his off hand, Irthar then stabs at the reflection of Nobody, and wounds the creature. At the same time, the image of Irthar attacks with his mace, a heavy blow landing against Irthar's back. Irthar is wracked with pain but manages to stand his ground.   Feeling reinvigorated from the potion, Kanuni is back in the fray, targeting the reflections of the little girl, Nobody, and Irthar with Burning Hands. The image of the little girl takes the brunt of the spell and flares out of existence. The image of Nobody nearly destroyed, too, but manages to continue in the fight. The image of Irthar is on the edge of the spell's cone, and receives a light burn.   Another bolt from Nobody's crossbow goes wide and misses it's target. In true fashion of a reflection of Nobody, his image fires it's crossbow at Irthar and misses.   Irthar slashes at his own reflection with his rapier, and stabs with his dagger. He hits the creature with the rapier but misses with the dagger; the rapier doing a lot of damage to the image. The reflection ignores Irthar's attack and swings his mace at Kanuni, missing. Kanuni in turn ignores the attack from the reflection of Irthar and casts Fire Bolt at the reflection of Nobody. The image of Nobody flares out, the visage of the evil grin the last to fade away.   Nobody rushes in to the melee, releasing three punches at the reflection of Irthar, landing the last two. The image is critically hurt, but still standing. This doesn't last long as Irthar again stabs at the creature with his rapier. As the blade penetrates the chest of the image, it too flares away in to nothingness.   With the enemies now vanquished, Kanuni slumps against the wall and pulls out his pipe; Irthar slumps to the ground, rolls on to his back and stares at the ceiling. Showing the first bit of concern for the tied up little girl, Nobody returns to the bedroom to check on her. Standing in front of the mirror, over the body of the little girl, Nobody sees his reflection in the mirror doing the same, with a manic grin.   With mace in hand, the reflection steps forward and out of the mirror, taking a swing at Nobody. The monk dodged and runs into and down the hallway, towards his team mates. The reflection is confused as he enters the hallway after nobody; everyone was hidden or has managed to leave the hall.   Before the image can enter the hall, Kanuni, hearing Nobody's activity and still not fully rested, runs down the hallway, and enters a doorway. He has found the greenhouse, a windowed room that is filled with a variety of plants that have overgrown their pots. A low magical light emanates from a sphere in the middle of the room; a scrawny haggard man sits near the sphere, entranced by the glow. Kanuni hovers just inside the doorway, so the strange man ignores the wizard, but within seconds a flood of rats that had been nesting among the plants swarms out and begins biting at him. Kanuni releases the spell, Shell, that he has stored in his ring. The rats are unable to find flesh in the attack on Kanuni, and he steps out of the room, the rats following him to the hall. The strange man at the orb pays him no mind.   Irthar steps out of the shadows, crossbow trained on the image of Nobody, and fires. The bolt grazes the creature. Irthar steps back in to the shadows. The image doesn't see Irthar fire on him, but he does see the general direction that the bolt came from, so heads down the hall in that direction. At the same time, the rats have lost Kanuni as he has ducked out of sight after entering the hallway; but, the rats do see the reflection of Nobody and swarm in it's direction.   In his hiding place, Kanuni drinks one of his potions, the magical elixir healing some of his wounds.    Another crossbow bolt, this one from Nobody, whizzes down the hall but misses it's target.  Irthar follows, releasing a crossbow bolt that does find it's target, critically injuring the reflection of Nobody.  Content with his success, Irthar ducks in to the sitting room and melds back in to the shadows.   The image of Nobody, finding no other adversary than the rats that are now swarming him, swings his mace at the swarm, killing one of the rats, before succumbing to the rat bites and dying; he disappears.  With no perceived enemies in sight, the rats returned to the green house.
